Fossil Free Pride

We ask again: Drop BP. Drop Shell. Exclude the top 200 fossil fuel companies. Exclude genocide enablers. Engage with community sponsorship concerns. This calling in is an act of love. For Pride, for queer culture and for queers everywhere.

For joy Beyond protest, pride is an important moment in the queer calendar for celebration of LGBTQIA+ culture, a place for queer community and a space for collective queer joy! But our joy cannot be manufactured by the corporations that fuel and profit from genocide and the climate crisis. We cannot celebrate here under the logo of Shell and BP while they wreck the climate and decimate Gaza. There is no pride for some of us without liberation for all of us.

For protest The first pride was a protest, and all other Prides follow in those footsteps. Corporate giants are fundamentally invested in a status quo that makes their profits possible, contradictory to queer liberation.

For transparency Sponsorship is a transaction, not a donation. It comes with benefits to the sponsoring company, many of which are proudly advertised. If organisations would like to make anonymous donations and support Pride without conditions, they are able to. It is vital that LGBTQIA+ organisations are discerning and selective about who can benefit from being associated with Pride, its legacy and its progressive values. Therefore we must be clear on who we will not lend these benefits to: No pinkwashing for climate wreckers or genocide enablers.

For Grampian To consider only the needs of the local queer community is insufficient, and even within Grampian fossil fuel majors have damaging impacts. - Shell bulldozed Torry homes to make way for operations - The imposition of BP’s skyscraper oil rig in Aberdeen’s South Harbour - The proposed destruction of St Fittick’s Park in order to make way for the ‘Energy Transition Zone’ with Shell as a partner and against local community wishes We know BP and Shell bring destruction and displacement wherever they go.

For climate justice There can be no queer liberation on a dead planet. The top 200 fossil fuel companies are existentially tied to extracting the fossil fuel reserves they already own - this guarantees climate breakdown. BP and Shell have abandoned their already weak climate targets, all claims to be an essential part of the energy transition are provably false. Worldwide, LGBTQIA+ people are more likely to live in cheap housing vulnerable to extreme weather, be discriminated against in disaster scenarios, and are less likely to have familial support. The climate crisis affects the most marginalized people across the world first and worst.

For Palestine Israel weaponizes queerness to prolong its occupation of Palestine. We have witnessed over 500 days of genocide and seen pride flags planted by occupation soldiers on the rubble of Palestinian homes and bodies. This genocide runs on fuel provided by fossil fuel giants that profit massively from this occupation. - BP is the operator and largest shareholder of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline, which is supplying Israel with around one third of its oil during its genocide. - BP applied to Israel for fossil fuel exploration licenses in Palestinian waters and won them during the genocide. - Shell-owned Brazilian oil fields supply Israel with crude oil shipments. These climate wreckers profit from and fuel the colonial dispossession of Palestinians.

Our demands: Drop fossil fuel giants BP & Shell as sponsors. Adopt an Ethical Sponsorship Policy that excludes: A) The top 200 fossil fuel companies B) BDS Movement National Committee listed companies. Create a mechanism for community sponsorship concerns to be raised. Why?

As a result, this coalition of grassroots organisers feel it is essential to bring this issue to the attention of the wider queer community in order to bring greater scrutiny, engagement and accountability to Grampian Pride, an essential event that does much for the LGBTQIA+ people of North East Scotland. We need your voice to call for justice.

Calling in Grampian Pride An open letter addressing the continued sponsorship by BP and Shell There has been a sustained attempt in 2025 to engage Grampian Pride and its organisers, Four Pillars, in a good faith dialogue about the future of its approach to sponsorship. Regrettably, this conversation has been ended by Four Pillars who have stated firmly “a meeting is not needed at this time.” Energy Embargo For Palestine, Fossil Free Pride and Queers for Palestine logos at the bottom of the text.

The last Pride in the UK to be sponsored by fossil fuel companies, Grampian Pride has dismissed community concerns, so we are now bringing this issue into the public sphere with Energy Embargo for Palestine and Queers for Palestine.
