When so many people (me included) are trying so hard to find reason for hope, to make a case for optimism; well, things must really be bad.

Time, I argued, for introspection; step up on action, not rhetoric.

A rather depressing thought, on which I very much hope I am wrong:

The two great 'wins' of the early 21st century for the global environment - the #ParisAccords and #SDGs - are both unravelling before our eyes. Both based on the mistaken principle of "commitments without consequence".

THE ANGST OF AMERICA It has become commonplace to describe America as divided. But the recent US elections have made clear the inadequacy of that word.

Days from Trumps's second inauguration, let's not forget that he is the first person since Roosevelt to have totally defined, dominated and, in many ways, decided THREE U.S. elections in a row.

Paris Agreement on climate change: the good, the bad, and the ugly The Paris climate summit was historic as a political achievement but it’s not clear how and when the hard problems of emission cuts and climate finance get tackled.

At some point we will have to confront the reality that the #ParisClimateAccord framework of “commitment without consequence” that we were in such a hurry to celebrate may have less to show for itself than we expected.
