Canada is not as far gone as the US but to those who think we're on a completely different planet: you weren't here for the G20 were you? Or you didn't pay attention. It's all on the books waiting to happen again. Barely anybody was punished for doing it. Liberals even made the head guy a minister.

A portion of John Quincy Adams' Amistad argument before SCOTUS: "I will not recur to the Declaration of Independence--your Honors have it implanted in your hearts--but one of the grievous charges brought against George III. was, that he had made laws for sending men beyond seas for trial. That was one of the most odious of those acts of tyranny which occasioned the American revolution. The whole of the reasoning is not applicable to this case, but I submit to your Honors that, if the President has the power to do it in the case of Africans, and send them beyond seas for trial, he could do it by the same authority in the case of American citizens. By a simple order to the marshal of the district, he could just as well seize forty citizens of the United States, on the demand of a foreign minister, and send them beyond seas for trial before a foreign court."

Was just reading John Quincy Adams' oral arguments before SCOTUS in the Amistad case and this part seems, uh, pretty relevant

After mass firings, the IRS will be forced to close audits of wealthy taxpayers.

Audits of rich individuals and corporations will soon be closed — without action — due to a lack of personnel to complete them.

Millions upon millions in revenue will be lost.

It's always wrong to vandalize personal property and that certainly includes Teslas, and also: your government is actively disappearing innocent people without due process, so, you know, that second one is taking up my empathetic bandwidth at the moment.

Elon Musk and the “Misunderstood” Genius Great men and the contingent theory of history.

"In 1999...an assload of people got insanely rich and that this distribution was tied exceptionally loosely to merit, intelligence, and value creation." This is the environment in which Elon Musk got rich. From the archives:

Elon Musk Thinks He’s an Ayn Rand Hero. Nope: He’s One of Her Villains. Recent years have revealed the Silicon Valley venture capitalists and tech entrepreneurs who worship Rand to be racists, fraudsters, and looters.

Well, Elon Musk *is* like Howard Roark in the sense that he's dynamiting his Tesla stock value

Trump Brought African-Style Political Thugs to the U.S. I spent a career watching African politics. I never expected to see the same dynamics in my hometown.

"What we see may be nothing most of the time, but instead, we may sense an invisible force field of menace that is hard to define, easily denied, but increasingly feared." That's new in our politics. New from @hollybfletcher.bsky.social: www.thebulwark.com/p/trump-afri...

Trump backed GOP into a big corner with his “balanced budget” point.

The ONLY way House GOP could even think about upholding their “no cuts to Medicaid” swing seat promises and their spending cut mandates is deficit spending and bad math.

Now they have to gut Medicaid & hand it to Elon in public.

the tesla protest might objectively be among the most successful in history already just in terms of immediate response, if you consider they forced the world’s most powerful person & its most wealthy to fully degrade themselves like used car salesmen on live TV while the whole world watched agog.

I think some in the Senate have convinced themselves that the backlash to folding will be limited to “the left” and therefore ignorable.

Those people are deeply and profoundly misreading the moment and the stakes.

Virtually every swing district House Dem walked the plank to vote NO for a reason.

What too many people don’t grasp is that there a “fight” spectrum and an ideological spectrum. Many commentators and people in DC assume they pretty much line up exactly. This is not the case at all.
