The "robotaxi" analog is a theme of the novel 'Wrong Way' by @jomc.bsky.social

We also don't know if a person is connected by the magic of cheap telecommunications, like the Waymo teloperators in Manila, California, Arizona, and wherever else Waymo chooses to put them with no regulatory oversight.

As seen on FB, reminds me of @jomc.bsky.social's book:

then i learned the money isn't money to themβ€”it's leverage. a publisher who throws down seven figures on a debut novel is going to pull out all the stops β€”marketing, publicity, distribution etcβ€”and do whatever it takes to sell at least *something* or else their own careers are on the line.

related to my last tweet: i had always wondered why authors from the wealthiest backgrounds seemed to be the most obsessed and strategic about landing major 250k+ book deals...

part of the problem is also that people who break in who do not come from privileged backgrounds must cater to the taste and interests of supervisors/editors/producers etc who do

it all comes back to people seeing poverty (in adulthood) as moral failingβ€”a moral failing that couldn't possibly overlap with intellectual and creative skill or ambition

21.08.2025 19:51 β€” πŸ‘ 24    πŸ” 2    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

it's pretty much impossible for someone who makes six figures and up to understand how anyone gets by on half that or less. but that lower class includes most of this country! meanwhile virtually all art, journalism & culture is coming from a sheltered pov that only sometimes gestures at empathy

β€˜A million calls an hour’: Israel relying on Microsoft cloud for expansive surveillance of Palestinians Revealed: The Israeli military undertook an ambitious project to store a giant trove of Palestinians’ phone calls on Microsoft’s servers in Europe

Because I am angry I will share this again. One of the reasons that Israel is able to target individuals so precisely is that it collects every phone call in Gaza and stores the recordings in Microsoft Azure, then uses AI to analyze and pick targets.

β€œWrong Way” Takes the Shine Off the Self-Driving Car Joanne McNeil’s novel suggests that much of what we think of as technological progress is a new way to obscure human labor.

Also, just to say, I learned abt this book this am from an article about a footballer who reads books:

bombmagazine.org/articles/202...

which weirdly reminded me of:

www.thepinknews.com/2025/07/14/a...

and that I recently enjoyed @jomc.bsky.social's Wrong Way:

are there any models in particular that you'd recommend? it's hard to tell what's the difference between a $100 and $400 model and i'm not sure what decibel level protection i'd need other than this construction is definitely SUPER loud

14.07.2025 17:18 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

earbuds/earplugs tend to be too big for my ears (but i'm willing to tough it out for serious soundblocking).

Any and all other recommendations EXTREMELY APPRECIATED. I'm only two hours in to what i know is going to drive me nuts for the rest of the year

construction just got started next door to me and i'm finding it difficult to stay focused in my once (blissfully) quiet apartment. what should i do?

i just ordered a white noise machine. are there any noise-canceling headphones that work on silent mode? (still appreciate recs even if they don't)..

Third, the novel 'Wrong Way' by @jomc.bsky.social gives a wider view of how ppl who should know better do their best magical thinking to convince themselves otherwise, eg:

"The car is driverless. She isn't driving exactly. She's part of the car. A seer is a car part"

Tesla’s Robotaxis Are Rolling Out Soonβ€”With One Big Unanswered Question Neither the US federal government nor the City of Austin will say how teleoperations, self-driving’s critical safety feature, will be used in the service launching in Austin in just a matter of days.

In prep for Tesla's Austin few janky robotaxis + many teleoperators and other support humans launch, recommend 4 pubs:

First, @aarianmarshall.bsky.social has a fair & new article. What Phantom Auto did in Sacramento a few years ago was reckless and huge DMV failure.
