then i learned the money isn't money to them—it's leverage. a publisher who throws down seven figures on a debut novel is going to pull out all the stops —marketing, publicity, distribution etc—and do whatever it takes to sell at least *something* or else their own careers are on the line.

related to my last tweet: i had always wondered why authors from the wealthiest backgrounds seemed to be the most obsessed and strategic about landing major 250k+ book deals...

part of the problem is also that people who break in who do not come from privileged backgrounds must cater to the taste and interests of supervisors/editors/producers etc who do

it all comes back to people seeing poverty (in adulthood) as moral failing—a moral failing that couldn't possibly overlap with intellectual and creative skill or ambition

it's pretty much impossible for someone who makes six figures and up to understand how anyone gets by on half that or less. but that lower class includes most of this country! meanwhile virtually all art, journalism & culture is coming from a sheltered pov that only sometimes gestures at empathy

Because I am angry I will share this again. One of the reasons that Israel is able to target individuals so precisely is that it collects every phone call in Gaza and stores the recordings in Microsoft Azure, then uses AI to analyze and pick targets.

are there any models in particular that you'd recommend? it's hard to tell what's the difference between a $100 and $400 model and i'm not sure what decibel level protection i'd need other than this construction is definitely SUPER loud

earbuds/earplugs tend to be too big for my ears (but i'm willing to tough it out for serious soundblocking).
