Swallowtail butterfly

Not a bird this time. I am even worse at IDing butterflies than I am at birds but a Giant Swallowtail perhaps?

I think of buzzards as vultures as well but I'm in Kansas and have always said "vulture". Buzzards are the jail guard in Disney's robinhood to me lol

Hawk in a tree

I didn't know these were referred to as Buzzards in Europe and I actually don't know what sort of hawk this is. Merlin has said cooper's, board-winged, and red-shouldered based on different pictures of the same bird. Awesome to see regardless of what it is.

Female Summer Tanager. I hear them fairly often but this is the first time I've got a picture of one #birds 🪶

I'm in the Kansas City area and they are pretty rare this far north and west. Very cool birds and they travel in in big groups apparently called a "kettle"... So a kettle of kites which is pretty good.

Mississippi Kite

Not my best work but I thought I saw a hawk chasing a smaller bird, what I got though was almost cooler than a hawk or at least more rare around here. Mississippi Kite (eating something midflight) #birds 🪶

Broad Winged Hawk

I've got a different project taking my attention at the moment but while I working I noticed this one was back in the same tree. I've learned that the song birds getting loud is a good indication that I should go look around. #birds 🪶

Hawk in a tree

Hawks of any sort are my favorite bird but up until now I've never been lucky enough to snag a picture. Not sure if this is a red shouldered, broad winged or something else.

I've had a lot going on and haven't had much time to take new bird pictures but here is a juvenile Eastern Bluebird that I saw a few weeks ago. I think about this picture a lot.

Red bellied woodpecker

I got up really early yesterday to try and get some pictures. (too early turns out, wasn't enough light for most of time I was outside). Right when I was about to go in, I heard this one. I like how it's framed by the leaves and backlit by the sun coming up.

Phone pics but my friend came by this afternoon. I maybe threw out too many peanuts. It struggled to get them all before it gave up and went to stash the 3-4 it could carry. (I choose to believe we're friends) #birds 🪶

Was too focused on the downy woodpecker on the tree and missed the one in flight. I still like the picture though. #birds 🪶

Carolina Wren, looking quite smug for being such a goofball

Carolina Wren from yesterday, right after heavy rain broke the 100°+ heat wave (at least for a few hours). Doesn't look like it, but I like to imagine it was as happy as I was.

Amazing shot!

Kind of at the limit of my skills and equipment. I missed a shot with its wings fully spread 1/1250th of a second after this. BUT I am very glad to have got this "action" shot of a blue jay. I've been trying to get a shot of one for a while but they mostly hang out in my neighbors yard. #birds 🪶

Just for the record, some people think they are jerks. I think they are really awesome and I think their behavior is incredibly interesting.

First time I've seen a brown-headed cowbird in my backyard. I know they are jerks but still cool to see #birds 🪶
