Currently in Shibuya where a BIG anti-genocide demo is about to take place. Protest is set to start in 20 minutes, but there are already easily 100~200 (maybe more?) people gathered here.

per @brunodias.bsky.social: But for that 'buffet' style of social media to actually exist, there has to be a damn buffet! Right now there's a sad salad bar with maybe two or three niche options, one large bowl of soup that 99% of diners are eating from, and one smaller bowl of much more niche soup.

I joined Bluesky with invite code waiting list and distributed those to my friends because I believe(d) in its potentials. I've also seen you in the early days I got here. Right now I am sharing the same frustration with the skeptics as well ๐Ÿซ

I was Bluesky user #308, and have been a major booster of this platform since the beginning, but I'm starting to think that the skeptics were right.

It isn't too late to fix things, but I'm doubtful the team will take this excellent advice from @brunodias.bsky.social to heart:

If you take a look at "Cakrawala Indonesia" feed, there are quite a lot of Indonesians posting there. It's still not in the same scale of Twitter or Threads, though.

yeah and those are also rough to watch IMO. That and excessive (understandably) angry comments from the US have started to make me feel uncomfortable being here

Itโ€™s a very US-centric app and news from the Middle East or Asia either you need to specifically look for or get moderated into oblivion due to the fact that itโ€™s considered too violent. Which I can understand but I also find ICE raids violent and those donโ€™t get censored.

06.10.2025 15:27 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 4    ๐Ÿ” 1    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I've also been unable to see posts from non-Americans. My thinking is that it's a chicken and egg problem, but it has been a while since I joined (I was one of invite code users) and there hasn't been any improvement

06.10.2025 15:21 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Bluesky wasn't very good in relaying or providing news about recent protests in Indonesia despite fairly big Indonesian user base + active efforts from existing users to cross posts info from various sources

they were overshadowed with whatever happened in the US

wow I just learned about Link's ban today. This made me think that there's little to no benefits in using Bluesky

These are actions that will affect Blueskyโ€™s future. You gained a following because this place offered a safe haven for many oppressed minorities after Twitter went to hell. You need to be more honest with your users, and yourself. You know what you are doing, and you know itโ€™s not right. /6

We have seen in recent days that users who critiqued or even made light of the death of Charlie Kirk get suspensions or bans. You allowed people to harass your mods to take that action, including banning people who didnโ€™t violate any of the TOS. You caved to that mob. We have seen that. /4

You have said that harassing mods to ban people has never worked, but that is demonstrably untrue. We have seen Palestinian users, some here since the first days of Bluesky, banned for sharing fundraisers. Those users were harassed and mass-reported, and you capitulated to the harassers. /3

One of my Portuguese teacher in the past had a great comeback, though. She'd say, "If you have issues with the Portuguese grammar, please give your complaints to Instituto Camรตes. I am just a teacher here." lol

06.10.2025 13:52 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Like, what's the point of it?

Surely the teachers won't make up rules just to mess with us. Also, since they don't make the rules, what's the point of directing the frustrations to them?

06.10.2025 13:52 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I get that learning a foreign language can feel frustrating, especially if it's grammatically different to your first language. I've been frustrated, too.

But debating a native speaker - especially if they're professionally trained to teach the language is so odd to me?

06.10.2025 13:52 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Okay, so I've been attending Portuguese class for about three years now and I noticed something peculiar: some of my male classmates tend to debate the teacher on what's grammatically correct/not even though the teachers are native speakers ๐Ÿค”

Apple did something very similar to the people of Hong Kong in 2019, removing an app that allowed protesters to track police movements via crowdsourced information:

Indonesiaโ€™s Mass Killings 60 Years on Still Demand Justice The 1965-66 massacres were among the darkest days in Indonesian history. Marxism and communism remain banned in the country and continue to be applied to target critics of the government.

Successive Indonesian governments made vague promises that they failed to keep. Bedjo Untung of the 1965 Murder Victims Research Foundation said, โ€œNot a single 1965 survivor or family could get a court decision to document what they had sufferedโ€ www.hrw.org/news/2025/09...

The stories of Indo (Dutch-Indonesian) people are still rarely told in Indonesia, unfortunately, so you've got to read Chris' account on his family here.

For me it's a powerful yet poignant story, but sadly for many people it's a reality that they must live in.

Caught Between States as an Empire Dissolved A Dutch-Indonesian familyโ€™s documents from the mid-20th century reveal a painful story of separation and an administrative nightmare that prefigures todayโ€™s xenophobic politics

When my grandfather died in 2004, I was 11. At his home in Nijmegen I found a battered briefcase, unopened for years. Inside: photos, consular forms and letters โ€” a history of falling empire, colonial decoupling and rising nationalism that marked those who lived it.
