Give folks their flowers

No, I mean right now. Go tell someone you loved their work right now. They're on social media just say it, it has never been easier

"They know how much people love--" no they don't go say it right now to a composer or artist or game dev or writer or anyone AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH

The number of people who will respond to "Ask me for a copy" is a tiny fraction of those who would love to click on a non-paywalled link. Don't make people ask. SocArXiv is free to share, free to read, non-profit, academy-owned at a public university. Hello! Thanks for sharing.

It's great some authors will share their work if you email them for a pdf.

But this isn't a good use of your time, or theirs.

I do think academics have more important things to do than a system where they reply one by one to every potential reader who wants to read beyond the abstract.

Acceptance and commitment therapy is *an entire whole branch of therapy* devoted to stopping people from trying to shame ourselves into being better *because shame is corrosive*

How Can We Live Together? - Boston Review Ezra Klein is wrong: shame is essential.

"This is one valuable function of shame: it reminds us of who we want to be when we fall short, a goalpost that is necessarily anchored to the lofty height that our conduct fell beneath."

Yeah, I truly do not believe this is how shame works www.bostonreview.net/articles/how...

Episode 19 of #KioAndMaxi is OUT NOW!

Big thanks to everyone who took part (listen to the episode all the way to the credits to find out who - and how amazing they were).

Also, you can find every episode so far on linktr.ee/twostrangers... - if you so choose!

The picture shows a terracotta horse with a rider on four wheels.

Children loved to play with toys in #Roman times too: some 1,800 years ago, a child in Cologne was buried with a terracotta horse with a rider on wheels. It was certainly a much-loved which the child was also supposed to play with in the afterlife.

v specifically I've been reading this piece by
Olúfẹ́mi O. TÑíwò
which argues that some level of shame is part of a robustly liberal society www.bostonreview.net/articles/how...

he admits that shame is corrosive, just...idk I want more depth

Fern Hill Now as I was young and easy under the apple boughs

I adore this. FWIW, here is quite possibly my favourite poem in the English language: poets.org/poem/fern-hill

I just think that poetry needs some kind of linguistic structure to resonate with me. I'm not a fan of Rupi Kaur-style prose poetry.

I acknowledge that this is a minority position but I genuinely feel that shame is a corrosive feeling and that shame-based morality is corrosive to the psyche

Tomorrow I GM my campaign, where the players march on Amboise all the way from Aix and confront Fulk Nerra. Also they have Durandal, but it's broken.

How to Like Poetry A sympathetic guide for the perplexed

It's interesting. I read this guide on how to like poetry and now I think I like poetry *less*. Perhaps I'm just not built for it. amateurcriticism.substack.com/p/how-to-lik...

New post on RestoRes's website. "New initiative seeks evidence for effective open science practices"

The Global Research Initiative on Open Science, officially launched last week, aims to identify what works (and what doesn’t) in Open Science worldwide.

Unfortunately, many historical science anecdotes are probably false.

β€’ Edward Jenner didn't deliberately expose a young boy with full-blown smallpox to test his vaccine; and he wasn't the first to try using cowpox
β€’ Pasteur didn't discover a chicken cholera vaccine accidentally

The prototype used to develop the Apple 1. The wooden case is adapted from a breadbox (the holes for mounting on a wall and some of the hardware for the sliding cover is still visible), the wiring is hand-soldered, giant Sprague capacitators like yellow soda cans are along the back, and the chips are hand-placed in a grid.
