49c coffee at Mr French off Pearse St. Fair play for effective marketing, it's a hidden cafe that is surely on the radar for many students now. I wonder how that translates into regular custom. If their coffee is better I can imagine some may go out of their way in future.

When I rang the new supplier to cancel, I received a further counter offer for an additional cashback if I proceeded with the switch. First they offered an additional €50, and increased that to €100 when I was on the fence.

There are good savings to be had if they think you are about to move.

It pays to shop around and switch energy supplier.

My contract had lapsed by a few months with my current supplier. I switched to a competitor for a better rate. I received a counter offer from my old supplier, a lower rate back dated to the end of my contract and cashback

If economists are at fault, it may be on being too focussed on the first best and now being seen as out of touch by not considering seemingly obvious political economy constraints

Thanks for sharing! My take - first best policies like carbon pricing are first-best before political economy constraints are considered. Now that these are binding, we need to adjust. Perhaps behavioural interventions can help, or perhaps we need to focus on second best subsidies, etc.

Economists Are in the Wilderness. Can They Find a Way Back to Influence? (Gift Article) Economists have long helped to shape policy on issues like taxes and health care. But flawed forecasts and arcane language have cost them credibility.

The @bencasselman.bsky.social article about economists’ influence is good and you should read it. Some thoughts inspired by it and reactions I’ve seen (potentially interrupted by meetings)… www.nytimes.com/2025/01/10/b...

Surely "stalled" is misrepresenting the situation. Later in the article, it reads: "Last year, about 77pc attended college, but this year the figure has slipped to about 76pc."
