The Resurrection is not doctrine. It is not theology. It is not a teaching. It is the thing that all doctrine rests upon, the foundation on which all theology is conducted, the core and beating heart of all Christian teaching. It is LIFE.

We think that those things bring us greater security and peace, but the wonderful paradox of the Gospel that we observe on this Holy Wednesday is that in giving, we receive; in pardoning, we are pardoned; and in dying, we are born to eternal life.

This is the very heart of the Gospel, and it is a challenging lesson for anyone who wants to cling to the ways of this world, like Judas, and like us.

As Rowan Williams reminds us, God’s Wisdom “will always be an exile, a refugee, in a world constrained by endless struggles for advantage, where success lies always in establishing your position at the expense of another’s.”

And the question of trusting a Jesus who appears to be submitting to the violence and chaos around us, rather than taking up arms, wielding worldly power and influence, is a question all of us still face.

The question for Judas, as it actually is for us as well, was not “do I believe in Jesus?” but “which Jesus do I trust?”

Perhaps at the end of the day, like so many who have initially been drawn to Jesus, Judas was ultimately frustrated at the sheer weakness of Christ. The story wasn’t going the way he expected. He became disillusioned.

Today is Spy Wednesday, the day that Christians remember the story of Judas the betrayer. I'm thinking today of Judas's frustration at what emerged, over time, as the Gospel truth of Jesus's life and ministry, and of how many of us still share and display Judas's Gospel rather than Jesus's.
