From what I understand it was never a thing. Statistcally speaking it had about the same number of weird accidents that happen in any same area in the ocean, normalizng for traffic. I don't have a handy reference tho.

I know a lot of nice crackpots, but I won't get drawn into a discussion with someone who ignores and/or denies scientific reality to that degree. There's no upside.

Crackpots are drawn to classically trained scientists like phlogiston to n-rays. I've been in one of those gyres before and nooooooooope.

Maybe so, but IMO I'm seeing too many still giving him air. The best number for that is 0, but the next best is whatever we can minimize it to. I'm not talking suppression, of course, just hopefully getting the word out that he's well into crackpot territory now.

Like you point out it help but it's no panacea. I walked away from skeptic movement in part due to men like you describe.

This is literally what I've been warning people about ever since that execrable Fox TV Moon hoax show in 2000. Ignorant policians taking pseudoscience seriously and wasting tax dollars (and in this case an important science mission) on bullshit.

Reading this thread was galling, and embarrassing. My brain was *soaked* in the misogyny at and of that time, and it took me years to pull my head out of my ass about it. That stuff seeps in, becomes the air you breathe without realizing it, which is why we have to be vocal about it.
