Final night shoot of the Puma

The HC1 Puma was delivered into RAF service with 33 squadron back in 1971, with 230 squadron standing up in the following January. The Puma was brought in to replaced the aging Westland Whirlwind.

Over the last 5 decades the Puma has been in the thick of it whether it’s Northern Ireland though to both gulf wars, humanitarian aid in the former Yugoslavia, on to Operation Herrick in Afghanistan.

In 2013 the Puma received upgrades from Eurocopter, now holding design authority from Aerospatiale, and the Puma was delivered and integrated back to the RAF between 2013-2015. Now branded as the HC2 it had radically improved performance and a broader situational awareness for crews. Still flying with both squadrons, now 28 squadron flies them and the Chinnok as an Operational Conversion Unit (OCU)

With the eminent retirement of the Puma it’s safe to say the aircraft has fulfilled its job over the years, and hopefully someone keeps one around on the airshow scene if they come up for disposal.

Sadly at this time we still don’t know what will replace it

I just hope that the compassionate side of the USA can find their way to fight back cause at the moment this is going to send the world to a desperate place, which I cannot see any way out of.

I didn’t want to get political on this account, but after watching the exchange between the Tangerine Tyrant, Weirdo beardo, and Vladimir Zelenskyy I can safely say you could see that President Bone Spur and his cohorts have distain of Ukraine. #Putinspuppets #SlavaUkraini

Only 3 of the 707’s exist now including the world. Including the one at Woodford, 707A WD280 is displayed in Australia at RAAF Museum Point Crook, Victoria , and the last 707A WZ736 residing as part of the Collection at Old Sarum, Wiltshire.

In 1956 she jointed RAE where she would go on to be involved in the development of fly by wire control systems and was the first to incorporate a side stick controller. She flew on until 1966 where she achieved her full airframe time and entered enforced retirement.

Part of the night shoot at Woodford involved a chance to photograph the Avro 707C.
One of only 5 707’s built WZ744 was built as the final variant of her kind, with two seats, to provide Orientation training on the new delta wing style of air frame with the pilots sat side by side.
