I’m know expert but as far as I am aware it is all legal. The relevant country issues a quota that can be shot each season as far as I am aware.
In my opinion though, that does not make it right.
I’m also somebody that broadly supports the shooting of game and deer.

No need to apologise, I just wanted to clarify the situation. The main point remains the same. πŸ‘

I must add as a point of clarity that that particular photograph is of Pigeons not Turtle Doves. The photograph and text are from two separate places. However, there was a Turtle Dove break advertised.

No problem Mark. Just saying it how it is.

Utterly deplorable and pointless.

This time last year @AspectForestry clear felled 2ha for long overdue heathland restoration at Sutton Heath, and made a fine job of it to. Will @EastSuffolk fulfil their moral obligation and have a further 2ha felled to bring the site into favourable condition?

If we want more homes, better built, quicker and with a lower carbon footprint - then many of them are going to offsite construction and timber frame.

We need to be growing more of that timber and board and insulation in the U.K. 🌲

Most impressed by Bellway’s new timber frame facility opened today at Sutton-in-Ashfield. The timber frames both substitute for more carbon intensive materials & themselves store carbon = a climate win-win. @forestryjournal.bsky.social @marycreagh.bsky.social @matthewpennycookmp.bsky.social

Heading to Nottinghamshire for the opening of Bellway's new timber frame facility. All part of the southward march of timber frame into England, a well established construction practice in Scotland accounting for 92% of family homes, compared to less than 10% in England.

Dispite the wet weather of late, progress is continuing on my site near Ipswich. I’m now thinning a large compartment of Corsican pine. Extraction will have to wait though until it stops raining and ground conditions improve. 25mm has fallen today with the month total near 100mm.

Large parts of woodland management and conservation rely on the production of domestic firewood. With it, a huge amount of rural jobs rely on it. Without home wood burning all that management work, habitat improvement and jobs will disappear. Please think carefully about what you post.

Thank you.
Unfortunately numbers of non native deer in the UK are far too high and having a real detrimental effect on our woodland habitats. There is no understory growing in the picture as you can see. Hopefully with some deer culling and increased light levels the understory will start to return

No problem at all.

The timber is being harvested on a standing sale basis. I pay the landowner for each tonne of timber I harvest - so they see a return income for growing the trees. I then have to market the timber, recoup the cost of the harvesting and extraction and 🀞try and make a small profit margin.

16.01.2026 13:23 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

2/2 The timber felled will be sold into the local firewood market. This is due to the relatively poor quality of the trees being removed. Although I can continue to harvest the trees, extraction of the produce will have to wait until ground conditions improve.

Thinning of a compartment of beech on my current site is nearing completion. Thinning this stand will allow the trees of better form and health to grow on with less competition. More light to the woodland floor should allow this to develop in a more diverse nature over time. 1/2

I just captured some winter sun coming through the trees on my worksite today. Everything feels better with a bit of brightness but unfortunately it’s forecast to be another wet day tomorrow.

Concerning and disappointing.
"Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) has not been so lucky, with its funding cut once again. Just Β£17.8m has been allocated to the government agency for the year ahead, short of the Β£37.5 of 2024/25 and Β£29.8m of 2025/26."

I would also like to to see some high intensity reared meat replaced by wild venison within our diets. It’s a far healthier meat option and it would do wonders for woodland conservation and management.

12.01.2026 22:30 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

In a number of ways I don’t disagree. In order to grow more trees for timber of a higher quality, they need to grown on better, more fertile land.

12.01.2026 21:15 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Planting trees isn’t just about conservation though, although that is vitally important. We need to continue to produce and increase a home grown supply of timber. An essential, sustainable and carbon storing building material. Many rural jobs also rely on its longevity.
