You know you married the right person when you now have two copies of โ€œA Companion to Marxโ€™s Capitalโ€ by David Harvey in your house.

Too many people think they should have opinions about things they don't have any facts about.

American who lives in the UK, and yes this is such a game changer. My partner and I rarely use our car (not in London) for various reasons but not needing to drive to a grocery store is definitely one. Have a mini grocery store across the street from our house. So helpful!!

I love when I find left readings in lecture rooms. Me replying to the empty room, โ€œwhy yes I would like to read this. Thank you so much for thinking of me.โ€

Still just getting started, but Iโ€™ve found YouTube videos to be really helpful. Also currently just using a lot of premade templates that I edit and arrange to make what I want. This has worked well for me thus far!

If you were teaching a class on AI/GenAI and how the technologies deepen environmental racism, what articles and other resources would you include? I'll start with some in a short ๐Ÿงต and I invite you to add your own. #EduSky

Also, to add. Just a complete lack of acknowledgment of how ChatGPT impacts the environment and the extremely problematic labour practices that are occurring within those spaces that are beyond the production of a calculator.

Had someone spew this at me yesterday. Itโ€™s such a lack of acknowledgment (ignorance) to how LLMs like ChatGPT work. They arenโ€™t comparable. Calculators do maths you could physically do. LLMs spews out information based on a prediction algorithm, ie what it โ€œthinksโ€ you want to know.

#UKHE Please encourage disabled students at your institutions to complete the DSUK annual survey. It is a vital tool in helping to shape disability support in HE, as well as providing invaluable feedback on current issues facing disabled students. It has real impact!

A safety manual for academics visiting America - Research Professional News Petra Boynton looks at what advice UK universities should give US-bound researchers and students

UK universities should be advising students and staff travelling to the US on social media use, what border staff are entitled to seize or search, what to do if detained, and how to keep US colleagues safe, says @petraboynton.bsky.social www.researchprofessionalnews.com/rr-news-uk-v...

We were given a prompt as an invitation to participate in this newsletter: โ€œHow are you using AI in the classroom?โ€ While we have accepted this invitation, we are engaging in the most humanistic act we can imagine refusing the prompt.

Ultimately, though, our objection to incorporating LLMs and generative-AI in the classroom is more fundamental: not only does it short-circuit the pathways of learning, but it also potentially nullifies what we see as our fundamental pedagogical commitment to our students and our scholarly commitment to the past.

I get asked a lot during talks at universities how to integrate LLMs into the classroom "ethically". And the more I think about it, the more I'm affirmed the answer is "don't".

This piece by @sonjadrimmer.bsky.social and Christopher Nygren on AI provides some excellent arguments as to why.

Very true. Was more of curious how it might impact some of my numbers. Iโ€™m not a medical professional and itโ€™s my first time being pregnant so it was also like โ€œahh should I tellโ€ kind of moment ๐Ÿ˜‚

Oh I didnโ€™t see that! I showed up to the blood work and was like โ€œyou should probably know Iโ€™m pregnant. Can you note that somewhere?โ€ And the woman just looked at me and said โ€œdonโ€™t need itโ€ lol

I did this. Thought it was interesting they never asked if I was pregnant even when putting in the date for my last period (which was a casual 3 months ago). Seemed like important information to know but ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ

Last one, Goldfish Boy by Lisa Thompson. This was a last minute addition and I couldnโ€™t put it down (and my students said the same). Thompson really brings to life the struggles of OCD for a child in a loving and affirming way. Funny, adventurous, and heartwarming. 6/6

Me holding the book Melissa (Previously published as George) by Alex Gino.

Melissa (formerly published as George) by Alex Gino was another beautiful read. This book is probably the oldest of the ones I chose, and the most American for my British students. They (and I) really loved reading Melissaโ€™s journey. 5/6

Next, The Star Outside My Window by Onjali Q. Raรบf. This book produced so many lovely conversations about childrenโ€™s ability to understand what some might consider adult topics. Love this book and really appreciated the authorโ€™s notes at the back for adults. 3/6

Next up is, No Ballet Shoes In Syria by Catherine Bruton. I really appreciated the depiction of Ayaโ€™s journey and the importance of dance/ the arts. Chose this books over The Boy at The Back of The Class, which I also recommend. 2/6

Now for my Studies of Childhood undergraduate course list. These were student choice novels for reading groups. Students read one of the novels, discussed, and then planned an interactive center to present the themes of the novel to their classmates:

First, my current reads: I was obsessed with Shannon Hale as a 11-12 year old and owe a lot of my love of reading to her. I had the urge to revisit them and they are just as delightful as I remember. Recently reread Princess Academy and am now revisiting the books of Bayern series. 1/2
