Paul presents ART

Edo had a few hundred years to achieve all that, and it's slow due to its political situation with the Shogunate at the time, which to me stagnated under their rule. Meiji had a few decades to achieve change and in today's world, change is everything and stagnation is death.

Artwise, Edo did produced Utamaro, Hokusai, Kuniyoshi and Hiroshige considered the "golden" era, but Meiji produced Yoshitoshi, Kunichika, Chikanobu, Sosaku Hanga and Shin Hanga which is the "decadent" era. Both periods have their triumphs.

When comparing time spans, political changes and influences, I personally think Meiji (1898-1912) is far more interesting than Edo (1615-1898). I think of Edo as traditional and Meiji as progressive.

Thinking of Robert Raushenberg's erased de Kooning drawing. It's difficult but not impossible, and ironically leaves a much lasting impression me thinks !!

if it is indeed 1922, it's groundbreaking !! :-) ... but Wiki says 1992 so I can deal with that.

Just saw a solo show of Gathie Falk's paintings from the early 1960s and immediately saw the reference to CoBrA artist Karel Appel. Me thinks a video will be in the works.

I find this quote really funny coming from a heterosexual male artist discovering "the hole". I think that's what most pubescent teens discover too (male, female of otherwise) ... lol. OK, I'm in a jocular mood today !!

I keep thinking of the role authorship plays in attributing power to a singular artist, where a purely community-based art has no author therefore power is dispersed. Most non-European historical art is "powerless" because of that (i.e. african art comes to mind). Just a thought.

Such an underrated artist in my opinion, especially when ceramic works are currently in the canon of contemporary artistic discourse.

Ironically, it's LIFE that ultimately kills ... lol.

This has got to be one of the "happier" Borduas I've seen so far.

So I googled and discovered that the artist began using AI tools in their compositions around 2023. As an image on the computer screen, it's very compelling, so now I wonder if the artwork exists in the real world, would it be equally compelling, maybe more or less so? Interesting times we live in.

I like it when artists push boundaries.

I like the simplicy of form, the density of line, and the softening of geometries in this work. Plus the economy of colour works for the composition. I think it's well done.

This is a war on ideology. Nothing more dangerous to a ruling party than a small gesture gaining popularity and strength.

Hypocrisy is the overwhelming theme of the right-wing, where laws are meant for other people and doesn't apply to them. Lack of empathy, greed and power seems to be rampant in their company.

I should read Robertson Davies again. One of my favourite writers, along with Iris Murdoch. I love how these authors weave complex and idiosyncratic characters that I feel are "my people". Just weird individuals minding their business with anxiety and doubt ... lol. Yeah, my people.

The so-called "book" is just a tool, like a hammer. If you miss hitting the nail with your hammer and you hit your hand, it's not the hammer's fault. It's the interpretation of the "book" that is at fault. Sometimes the fault is not in the stars but in ourselves. Just an opinion.

And make them eat the book like in the movie scene of "The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover". If you haven't seen the movie, it's a tour de force of filmmaking.

Developers are still profiting, especially with that bit-coin friendly mini-dictator of a mayor Ken Sims. I read a headline that there are 2000+ vacant homes in Vancouver, but market values have made them unaffordable so it doesn't reduce the homelessness situation.
