Elites know that the point of going to an elite college is precisely the network of people it opens up for students. This "AI-native U" model will just be used to reinforce inequities between elite and non-elite institutions, where students at the latter are denied even more access to people.

Those of us who do study the 90s can point to the fact that anti-affirmative action backlash was a studied project of the right that got laundered by venues like the NYT just as anti-trans stuff is today, eg:

Was just on hold and the hold Muzak was that one retro electro one made infamous by its use on TikTok and IDK if the biz was in on the joke or not?

And ofc the Ancient Greek stuff was not just about misogyny and not appearing feminine- it was also quite deeply about not appearing like a slave

It was actually about older and high status men establishing their mastery over younger and lower status men, who demonstrated their subordination by being the passive partner. David Halperin writes about this.

today's masculinity crisis re-makes the ancient crisis over self-mastery and anti-feminization in newer terms - these bros are literally reading the Stoics and interpreting them through racial capitalism

02.08.2025 14:50 β€” πŸ‘ 10    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

you can trace the history of Western philosophy as a series of different ways masculinity is in crisis: the ancient need to master one's self and one's body; the need to re-connect to the body that Enlightenment universality detaches one from; take that and add racial appropriation; neoliberalism

02.08.2025 14:46 β€” πŸ‘ 4    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I mean it's in Plato: self-mastery/sophorsyne as being a man in relation to oneself, exhibiting the self-mastery necessary to be master over others (and thus not subject to them), he hated poetry & music to the extent they were feminizing, etc etc

02.08.2025 14:43 β€” πŸ‘ 26    πŸ” 6    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 1

what made millennial alt rock different was it was the first rock masculinity premised not on the appropriation of Black cool, but on misogyny and anti-feminist backlash...which is why it really is the direct antecedent to the manosphere.

See also Lauren Goodlad’s 2003 description of alt rock radio DJ banter. How is this not the manosphere avant la lettre?

Read the interviews on Daphne Carr’s book on PRETTY HATE MACHINE. Millennial alt rock was the manosphere for men and boys 14-34 from like 98-05.

01.08.2025 21:09 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Insofar as it says "sure yes actually everything really IS made up by people but things nevertheless have material consequences that we are even MORE responsible for bc WE are making them up," existentialism is IMO the exact philosophy to counter this sort of BS

I talk with media studies professor and public media expert Josh Shepperd for an explainer. In short, it's dire

I always appreciate criticism from an explicitly xennial perspective (I too saw an original Star Wars in its original theatrical release, Nevermind came out when I was 13, etc etc)

Hmmm if only there was a widely-read book that said the claim "sex is repressed" doesn't actually index the fact of sexual repression, but functions instead as an excuse to talk about sex all the time

To clarify this is for a scholarly projectβ€”volume editors would need to be tenured academics in a relevant research area or PhDs with the equivalent publication record

I am very eagerly looking to commission an Encyclopedia of Latin American Music & Music Cultures that's printed in BOTH English & Spanish (corresponding r & l pages, respectively...we may also be able to do some entries in Portuguese). If you want to edit or co-edit such a volume, DM or email me!
