Like the interesting discussion is not “Zhao is doing Shakespeare fanfiction” but “how does Zhao’s fanfiction background impact her storytelling?”

I guess what I’m saying is that’s a discussion that has been had a lot, people either agree or disagree, and it’s not as compelling to me as what role fanfiction as a genre and subculture plays in contemporary media production.

I guess, but I also think “historical fiction is/isn’t fanfiction” is a boring discussion when talking about fanfiction’s relation to media today.

However, we are probably overdue a serious look at the way fanfiction is influencing and interacting with “mainstream” storytelling now that the boom generation are grown-up media professionals and we’re past the first shocks of fan visibility online.

Discussing any reference/rewriting as fanfiction is kind of boring as both a dismissal and defense at this point, I think as I read some of the discussion around Hamnet

Obviously it works because Jetten is young and handsome, but it also shows his boldness in his willingness to lean into it instead of shying away. And boldness was a big part of his success.

Is this a potential successful counter to right-wing Internet success? Something equally “unserious” except for the underlying sense of “they’re on our side” for a different kind of active online audience.
