This is expected to be a record breaking winter, and many families are going to lose their money on food before they can buy coats. Even without money to donate, there are always other ways to help.

📱 To learn what you have around you, go to Facebook and Nextdoor. Facebook groups especially! Check out local libraries, resturants, and stores for fliers. Many churches also publicly host their bulletin that will list the charities nearby. Most charities have a "volunteer" tab on their website

🌱 Also for food pantries specifically:
Disposable food packaging, disposable cooking tins, disposable napkins and plates, and disposable silverware, are often in demand. Call the pantry FIRST to ask though. Usually they just prefer cash if you dont have a significant ammount of these items.

🧦 Unused products- tooth brushes, razors, floss, deodorant, hand soap, toilet paper, paper towels. Also undergarments and socks.
Winter items: gloves (work/winter), hats, scarves, coats, blankets, and winter boots and shoes.
Some places take fabric, cleaning supplies, and storage items as well!

🛏 Last one is shelters, but if a shelter is good it is unlikely to let someone suddenly sign up to work on the inside. What a shelter might accept w/o a background check is auxiliary time donations, like cleaning linens. They also need basic necessities. This brings us to:

🌱 Urban community gardens are different, with smaller plots and bigger populations. What they make is usually set for a specific pantry or shelter. These gardens often need a lot of hands to keep up with their high output, and there is also often a need for volunteers with powertools for.

🌱 Volunteer at a community garden. Not a "selling lots" one but one for outreach. Rural and suburban ones often run a CSA. Sometimes they will donate surplus to local food pantries. You can offer to deliver it if they don't! Side note, CSA ones often will give the volunteer portions of produce.

🛻 There are other organizations that organize driving to deliver food and groceries to disabled and elderly people. Meals on wheels is known for this with a focus on the elderly, but many other groups are asked for this. In my experience, pantries get asked for this a LOT.

🍎 Food pantries need help picking up, moving, and organizing food, not just handing it out. Especially for holidays they often have to ask students to volunteer, but students can't drive a car to deliver food to the pantry or stack heavy boxes.

How to still help with the loss of #SNAP even if you don't have cash to donate by donating your time or non-food supplies

Good good, there is enough Jayvik angst for all. The harvest was bountiful this year.
