01.07.2025 16:40 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0 I started in developmental disabilities as an undergrad and it was truly formative. Many of the lessons I learned serving people with profound disabilities shaped who I became as a clinician.
Thane and a crew of about 1200 providers are doing beautiful work for this very underserved population.2/2
Listening to the incredible array of services offered by Trinity Services with my old grad school pal Thane Dykstra, I am reminded of what a crap job psychology has done in the research and training of folks in the treatment of folks with intellectual disabilities. 1/2

For the client, who will I, might I, dare I be in this world.
For the therapist, who will I be in the room as the client faces into that task.
The books are fine, but you can't do this sort of thing strictly by the book.
It is the creative aspects of the work that have always interested me, because the problem we face in classrooms and clinics is fundamentally about creative work where the medium is personhood. 2/x

Last Gulf (of Mexico) sunrise from the screen room and headed to North Carolina for a few days. It was good to see my youngest two daughters, to swim in the sea, and to eat the fishes.

What a shameful sack of shit NYT has become.
20.05.2025 12:50 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Out for a joyous storm run in Oxford, MS. I used to run these trails when I taught here. My favorite Mississippi trail runs are midseventies with thunder, lightning, and rain pouring down. So much fun and soooo many turtles. I had forgotten that rainstorms get them out moving.

Talking "poetics of behavior" and "behavioral phenomenolgy" to evidence-based crowds is terrific fun. The is my kid of behaviorism.

We gave up drove into a spot near a little town park in Fort Sumner, NM. A little loud, but sleepable. Hanging out this morning, reading, eating, writing while the temps are pleasant. And really, it is all good.

We got pulled in and thought we would wander around in the morning. After we got all settled in: train one--horn blasting for miles, shaking the ground....and within an hour train 2, 3, and 4 rattling our brains and each with the endless loooooooong blast of their horns.

There are still 8 people living in the town in three houses, but the church, post office, a little 2-story hotel, and the rest of the houses are all in various states of tumble down. It sounded cool and interesting.

Just so you know it is not all joy and light on the road in the van, last night we were completely blown out by TRAINS.
We had just watched the most astonishing moonrise near Vaughn, NM. I had found a spot for the night in Yeso, NM. Yeso is a ghost town (mostly).

I used to subscribe to NYT but this sort of idiocy posing as fair & accurate put an end to that. I suppose we shouldn't be concerned when someone gives him a $400,000,000 airplane either. 12.05.2025 17:21 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0My current workshops & invited talks are brimming with talk & experience of what I am calling the โpoetics of behaviorโ. IMO students of psychotherapy ought to be reading more poetry and fewer treatment manuals. Having an ear for the poetics of behavior is an enormous asset in doing psychotherapy.
