My friendโ€™s summer house bordered Pishe Lake. One evening, the object rose from the water and drifted toward him. When close, its outer shell opened and a horizontal ray of light shot out, pulsing from gold to silver white. It was so dazzling that my friend could only look at it from the side.

Between the years of 1056 and 1063, a flying objectโ€”round and shiny like a pearlโ€”came to Yangzhou City and was seen by many. It flew at night and retreated to local waters during day. First at Tianchang County Marsh and later in both Pishe and Xinkai Lake.

Many things shocked John and I as we were finishing Stars That Pause: 2,000 Years of UFO Encounters & Lore, but the sheer number of classical accounts that match up to anonymous experiences today is wild!

The Feather Detective: How Roxie Laybourne Pioneered Forensic Ornithology You wouldnโ€™t know it, looking at the tiny elderly woman in the white lab coat bent over a table in a halogen-lit government office, you wouldnโ€™t know she had spent her youth doing science with her whole body: extracting herself from a deadly mudflat with stubbornness and applied physics; narrowly escaping permanent tendon damage after severe sunburn on the tops of her feet during a daylong barefoot tide pool expedition; managing to return ashore by manually rigging a rudder after her boatโ€™s steering apparatus had broken and left her stranded in the open ocean; surviving blood poisoning in the pre-penicillinโ€ฆ read article

How to be yourself, when you have no self. Lessons from Zhuangzi | Aeon Essays As Zhuangzi saw, there is no immutably true self. Instead our identity is as dynamic and alive as a butterfly in flight

Imagine if we hadnโ€™t been conditioned to believe that our true self is something fixed and inborn. Would it reduce human life to a meaningless chaos of wandering without purpose? Or could it be more peaceful, more adaptable, and more exciting?

How David Hume split literature from philosophy | Aeon Essays Hume distrusted literature and worked to discredit character sketches as legitimate forms of philosophy

On Looking: Poet Lia Purpura on the Art of Noticing โ€œThe tree which moves some to tears of joy is in the eyes of others only a green thing which stands in the way,โ€ William Blake wrote in his most spirited letter. โ€œAs a man is, so he sees.โ€ Because how we look at the world shapes the world we see, every act of noticing is an act of worlding. The Latin root of notice is to begin knowing, to have an instrument of recognition, and yet human consciousness is a prediction machine that recognizes only what it already knows, sees what it expects to see, lensed through its anticipationsโ€ฆ read article
