Clinical psychology depends on scientific evidence, but research from @chopwood.bsky.social et al. suggests that the kinds of data most commonly produced may not always align with what clinicians find most useful in practice. Read the article in American Psychologist: doi.org/10.1037/amp0...

The trope “I’m an introverted extravert” is a great illustration of a) the inherently contextual nature of personality and b) limits of even our best trait models.

Yeah, that's something I'd love to brainstorm about, so I'll definitely take you up on that offer.

Fascinating work. The next step here might be AMPD Criterion A. Identity and self-direction are narrative-structural constructs that self-report struggles to capture. This is the method that could finally scale personological assessment of personality functioning from unconstrained text.

Thank you and you’re welcome! I thought it would be a fun thought experiment to see my old career and my new one combine.

What Three Years of Stand-Up Comedy Taught Me About Personality Science Before I was a clinical psychology researcher, I was a stand-up comedian.

The interpersonal situation framework describes a dynamic, unfolding context where perception, construal, affect, motivation, and behavior cycle between self and other. It also describes every open mic I ever did. Here, I map CIIT onto my experience.

4/ These findings suggest the AMPD does a strong job translating the borderline PD construct into dimensional terms, but there's room to grow—especially for capturing relational aspects of the disorder.

3/ Coverage wasn't uniform across borderline features, though. Identity disturbance and affective instability were well captured, while interpersonal features like negative relationships showed notable gaps.

2/ The AMPD's Criteria A and B collectively accounted for roughly 80% of variance in borderline PD features. After adjusting for measurement error, that number climbed closer to 90%.

This is excellent. The most interesting result isn’t that AP outperforms PP, but that the treatments seem to operate on different time horizons. When change unfolds over years, follow-up length stops being a methodological detail and becomes the result.

This piece argues that psychodynamic constructs become scientific when treated as hypotheses about interpersonal dynamics over time—an idea Leary had decades ago.

Psychoanalysis and interpersonal psychology were never enemies.
They just spoke different languages.
Timothy Leary tried to translate between them—and almost succeeded.
