Ventilation of the North Atlantic is Weakening
20 January 2026 / Kiel. The renewal of deep waters in the North Atlantic has slowed markedly over the past three decades. This is shown by a new study from the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Resear...
Ocean waters are aging? What?
Yes: oceanographers call 'age' the time since deep ocean water was last in touch with the atmosphere. It is a measure of 'ventilation', deep vertical overturning of the ocean.
Data show this process is slowing: #AMOC slowdown. Bad news. π

The session is scheduled for Friday, May 2, 2025, from 14:00 to 15:40 CEST in Room E1. It is chaired by Giulia Faucher, Carolin LΓΆscher, and Gerhard Herndl. The program includes a 5-minute introduction, speaker presentations, a discussion on marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR), and audience questions. Featured speakers are Louis Legendre (France), Daria Atamanchuk (Canada), and David Ho (USA). The session is hybrid with Zoom access. π
I'm on an mCDR panel at #EGU25, but I just learned that our convener Carolin LΓΆscher from Denmark won't be there.
She's been diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer whose expensive treatment is only available in the US and UAE.

Overview of oxygen βstageβ nomenclature used in this review. From top to bottom shows the ranges most often associated with the descriptive terms OMZ, oxygen-deficient zone (ODZ), anoxia, dysoxia/hypoxia, and anoxia in seawater. Oxygen concentrations are shown on a log-linear scale along with a simplified schematic of several proxy-relevant components of other redox-sensitive reactions. Chemical concentrations other than oxygen are non-dimensional, but all relate to scales. The redox ladder is modified from Canfield and Thamdrup (2009).
#WeekendReading: Hoogakker (and 67 other people) go into the current state of low-oxygen proxies currently in use in paleoceanography. It's a small book (95 pages), more than a paper, and covers a lot. π§ͺβοΈ
