Mapping evictions in Washington, D.C.
Last year a @merrillcollege.bsky.social grad student told me she wanted to build a news app about evictions in DC. Given the schedule and amount of work, it was an ambitious project.
Taylor Nichols not only did it but got it published by a DC news org!

How ICE detainees are moved miles away from families and attorneys
ICE relies on a vast network of detention facilities to house immigrants across the country, sometimes transferring people up to 15 times before deportation.
New story: ICE is moving detainees faster and more frequently. βItβs about efficiency for ICE on their end, but with a total disregard for the people that theyβre detaining and ripping apart from their loved onesβ - Ghandehari of Detention Watch Network www.latimes.com/politics/sto...

Humanity is rapidly depleting water and much of the world is getting drier
Research shows vast portions of the world are losing fresh water and getting drier. Groundwater depletion accounts for two-thirds of the continents' water losses, contributing to rising oceans.
Satellites have been tracking the water held in glaciers, lakes and the worldβs vast underground reserves β aquifers. A extensive analysis of that data reveals water is rapidly disappearing beneath much of humanityβs feet, and large swaths of the Earth are drying out. www.latimes.com/environment/...

The transformation of the prison into migrant detention continues a pattern of ICE moving into shuttered prisons. With several recently closed prisons in the state and one more expected next year, activists worry whether one of those facilities may be next.
