Thinking about Black queer & trans people especially youth in Waterloo Region and the erasure they experience in the Black community. An erasure that forces them into hiding in schools, puts them at risk of being “outed” as “payback”. The community wld rather make excuses than hold these children.

We need to demand investment in police-free safety initiatives that is for us, by us. This region’s leadership has allowed 2SLGBTQIA+ hate to rise. As a community, we quietly count the lives lost through suicide and overdose. Do not be conned into aligning with the police. They will not keep us safe

Trusting the police without question is a function of white supremacy and it puts the most vulnerable within our community at risk. Threats of violence and hate in this region are real and ongoing. We don’t need to rally together. We already do. 4/

Has the WRPS provided the community with the name of this anti-gay group? They handed this information off to us and we are doing what we have always done- created our own safety. Queer safety has NEVER been the priority of any policing entity. The police are not our friends. 3/

On Tuesday Oct 19th, 2SLGBTQIA+ events and programming were cancelled out of an abundance of caution based on information received by Waterloo Region Police Services. These details have been relayed publicly by the organisations that were contacted. There is no ongoing investigation at this time 1/

We should all be standing against Bill 33!

We owe to children to learn how the education system works. Calandra and the Ford government is taking advantage of low system literacy. It is the children who will suffer for this.

Being an artist in Waterloo Region is its own kind of exile from art.

I hadn’t delegated in many years but Arts Build Ontario’s Meanwhile Spaces initiative resonates quite deeply with me. I was reminded of the political violence, the expectation of trauma sharing and victimhood narratives of the most advantaged in the room.

Good time to put those territorial acknowledgments and commitments to decolonisation to use.

Bill 5 is a danger to Indigenous sovereignty; it’s a danger to the land.

Just building more housing, on its own, will be insufficient because without stronger tenant protections, nothing will stop people from being pushed out of their homes whenever it becomes expedient for their landlord to do so. It won’t ensure-that the new housing being built is safe and habitable.
