Going east on McKinley/Knapp, an intersection near the river. Black SUV in the right turn lane suddenly turned on hidden red/blue lights (no siren), went through the red light, then turned off their lights not even halfway down the next block. Clearly no emergency aside from not wanting to wait.

Absolutely love watching an unmarked Milwaukee Police car use their lights to run a red light! My favorite thing is seeing my tax dollars pay someone to do something that they would ticket me for also doing. Outstanding behavior #MilwaukeePD, we love to see it

When I looked into wtf Roko's basilisk is, I was like "doesn't that mean everyone should vehemently be working to STOP the development of superstars AI? You're all saying it will inevitably decide to end humanity, so everyone developing it is tacitly working towards ending humanity." Mind boggling

"After Musk/DOGE's ill-fated efforts to dismantle major parts of the federal government, hundreds of employees are now being asked to come back and try to keep it running pretty please"

I haven't even read the article yet but I assume this would be a more accurate way to put it

And remember, the reason he wanted separate vaccines wasn't due to any science, but because *he'd filed a patent application for a single measles vaccine*. It was just grifting.

i’m not going to be lectured about political violence by people whose politics is violence

Aside from all the other reasons I won't be mourning Charlie Kirk (note: this is not the same as taking glee from political violence), it's difficult to feel bad about a situation when the person affected actively advocated for more of that exact situation. Like idk what else you wanted man πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

β€œawful people don’t deserve to be killed, but they don’t deserve to be praised, either” is apparently a thought too complex for the pundit mind

My feed is almost entirely people condemning violence and telling others not to celebrate this.

Charlie Kirk's political and social opinions are hateful garbage. And he has the same right as anyone else to express them without fear of being shot. Political violence suppresses all free speech, not just the stuff we agree with.

I may be having a larger internal emotional response to this sandwich than I did when I first read the news 4 minutes ago (I'm at work so it's all internal)

That's a massive crowd at that event, huge numbers and jam packed. Hopefully the ensuing evacuation was managed enough and there wasn't a panic stampede on top of it

Ooh what's that one? I can't get lower than $4 per month (and I have to do the annual game of "go to cancel so they offer me the discount to keep me")

The researcher Nima Sanandaji calculated the poverty rate of Americans with Swedish ancestry. It was 6.7 percent. They also looked at the poverty rate in Sweden, using the American standard of poverty, and it was also 6.7 percent. Different political systems, same outcome.

He also comes uncomfortably close to endorsing a genetic explanation for poverty reduction.

The simple fact is that America's most effective anti-poverty strategy is Social Security, a program that gives unrestricted lump sum payments to old people. No culture change necessary!

This is a common conservative trope: Giving money to poor people isn't enough, we need to focus on "cultural values" like hard work and marriage.

The problem is that red states have been doing that for decades and it doesn't work! Telling people that jobs are good doesn't help if there's no jobs.

And THEN I'll have to accurately interpret their results myself.

Or, they suppose, I can simply trust that David Brooks, who has definitely never misrepresented information before, is being intellectually honest in his editorial, published by the US's paper of record.

I'm sure his claims stand up.

This first study was merely mentioned as "a study from May" (didn't even name authors).
The second (and only linked) study was actually a blog describing the study.
The third was from 1997 and just named the author.

So the @nytimes.com is leaving me to Google around and hope I find these studies

I like to listen to articles when available. I heard Brooks "cite" three studies that support his claim that "money doesn't actually help". Curious, I scrolled through the article to find links. Surely this article by such a prominent New York Times columnist was well supported!

08.09.2025 18:38 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Brooks cited 2 studies to support his point so we'll actually need 9,524 studies as a counter.

Well, "cited" is a strong word. He mentioned them. So I'm sure they exist and do in fact contain the conclusions he drew!

Every month I come soooo close to canceling my subscription, but then there's a Jamelle Bouie or Tressie McMillan Cottom piece I really wanna see. Honestly, probably few enough to not overrun my monthly free articles...

Oh no, the arrest warrant I had blew away in the wind and I knocked over 2 other agents while trying to grab it!
The person went back into their residence all on their own (I definitely didn't suggest they do so) and I have no basis for entry!
I keep dropping all my zip ties!

I used a messenger bag for a yr in HS (stylish variety). Barely held everything, hurts the shoulder it's on, plus carrying it cool (down by your hip) sucks. It just bounces around cuz it's sticking out flat instead of looking slouchy & chill. But she probably has to learn these lessons for herself

My unpopular opinion: in emergencies, power should be kept working on a hierarchy with residents at the top, essential agencies/orgs next, and going from there.

In any black out warning, data centers should be required to shut the f down to immediately free up grid space for more important users

But the vaccines weren't ready until AFTER the 2020 election, when he lost. He had one true good legacy, but he didn't get his way so he burned it to the ground and is destroying all of vaccine science while he's at it.
Presumably to punish all of us for not giving him the 2020 election

The crazy thing is that Trump was instrumental to this happening. He signed Operation Warp Speed in May 2020. The mRNA vaccines had 20-30 years of proof of concept & safety data, they were stuck at the point of needing large # in trials. Covid was the opportunity, OWS streamlined things and gave $$$

"Well you can just pay for YT Red"

Why must I pay for the privilege of not having my world actively degraded by corporations? Since the rise of shareholder capitalism, they LITERALLY do not care about any of us, only whatever will enrich themselves the most.

We should all want better than this.
