someone in a podcast I listened to today said like "all the developers that worked on legendary games in the 90s would never be able to get into the industry today" and I think that might be entirely accurate

Explore a land filled with lost legends, ancient powers, and ferocious monsters in TUNIC, an isometric action game about a small fox on a big adventure.

I'm gonna say as little as possible about what makes this game so special, because a lot of Tunic's magic is in the joy of discovery, so you'll have forgive me if I seem vague and tell you to trust me, but... Trust me on this. Play Tunic. I won't elaborate.

Very cool that this is seen as wise and noble cost-cutting and not obliterating entire career paths for US-based developers. Like each of those cells in your spreadsheet is a person who can no longer get a job doing their chosen vocation.
03.10.2025 20:04 β π 11 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0
so this happened a long time ago in Animation and basically here's what happened:
* 95% of the US animation industry was obliterated and all that was left was management positions or people doing 5 jobs at once
* basically the entire skill/knowledge base went away within a single generation

And even if tariffs get wiped out, I'm not hopeful we'll see costs come down. Inflation turns into greedflation very easily when your company is managed via spreadsheet.
Anyway... been a miserable week for labor, and I wanted to get some of this down as wrap-up thoughts before I switch my brain off

this brings to mind a recent episode of The Game Business Show that points out over 50% of the job cuts in video games are in california. it's about cost. i really feel like we're at a critical moment and we do not have the leadership to prevent the worst outcome

No one, and I mean NO ONE, in Hollywood is talking about Tilly Norwood except over drinks for a chuckle. Actors are such an important part of the creative process - you want an actor who can surprise you every take, not one whose performance you dial up and down on a laptop. This is an ad campaign.

Over 14k jobs on the line and 20 billion debt on top on a bet that even if by the smallest of chance works out it leads to still thousands of families negatively impacted. Nobody dealing with money in that kind of volume are smart just gamblers and on a hot streak that will end at some point.
