While trying to improve the structure of my WIP, I finally decided to try the SAVE THE CAT method. Iβm a third of the way through it and have already resolved some pretty important issues. Highly recommend!

This really made me laugh. A hilarious description of the situation!

09.05.2025 19:51 β π 124 π 73 π¬ 18 π 107This is without doubt the best article I've ever read about how to write the dreaded synopsis. It includes an example and details on why it works. Even with all the spoilers, I need to read this book! Thank you @keslupo.bsky.social

A great post from @phoebeannmorgan.bsky.social on recontracting. Many factors influence decisions but some stuff (such as sticking to deadlines and being good to work with) seem to be within the writerβs control. Worth remembering when starting out with a publisher

Haha yes! Theyβre the ones who get everyoneβs hopes up because theyβre the stories you hear about!
23.04.2025 18:15 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Oh interesting! So in either case youβve got to write a lot of books before you get there!
23.04.2025 07:39 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0On the Chosen Tropes podcast the other day they were talking about needing at least 5 books still in print to earn out an advance and make a living. Would you agree with that?
23.04.2025 07:31 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Itβs reassuring to know itβs still possible even if difficult / unlikely!
23.04.2025 07:17 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Exactly! I think when you first start out those unicorns look like horses, but the more you try the more you realise that theyβre not. Determination is the only thing thatβll get you through.
22.04.2025 19:31 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Iβve gone from thinking one day I might make writing a full time career to one day I *might* get a book published around my day job!
22.04.2025 18:06 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0As an outsider, Iβm always struck by authors saying how little they earn AND that theyβre often working to such tight deadlines that itβs difficult to fit around their full time job (which they need in order to pay the bills!). It feels a bit like the industry has unrealistic expectations?
22.04.2025 17:56 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Yeah I think Iβve seen a couple of reports of publishers paying huge advances to celebrities for memoirs on the basis of their social media following, but a following doesnβt necessarily lead to increased book sales.
22.04.2025 17:45 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I see how this can be an advantage for non-fiction, where the credibility of the author is key to a bookβs success, but for fiction this approach would surely risk cutting off unique and interesting perspectives.
22.04.2025 17:37 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Great post from @phoebeannmorgan.bsky.social about how an authorβs track record can influence future sales. There are so many factors, which go beyond whether the book is any good or not.

This is so true. We need to get away from the idea of AI doing things for us and start looking at it as a way to help us do things better.
21.04.2025 14:43 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0All writers need a bit of luck, but a good dose of determination is like buying multiple lottery tickets instead of pinning all your hopes to just one. How do I know this if I've never been published? Because I keep buying lottery tickets. I might never win, but if I stop I definitely won't (4/4)
21.04.2025 14:33 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Determination to start your book, determination to finish it, determination to edit it, determination to improve as a writer, determination to pick your pen back up when every agent you queried ignores you (3/4)
21.04.2025 14:33 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Some people are lucky. They write one book, send it to an agent, and get a publishing deal. But for those of us who don't have this luck, there's just one thing we can rely on: determination (2/4)
21.04.2025 14:33 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0The most important thing a writer needs isn't skill, or good ideas, or even industry contacts. Having these things will obviously help you, but they will only get you so far. How many times have you been told there's no market for your book, or that your writing's good but not the right fit? (1/4)
21.04.2025 14:33 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0It's more about editing, but 'On Editing' by Helen Bryant and Kathryn Price is brilliant. I found it helpful both at the writing and editing stage.

Could this be a question of how itβs used rather than where? I agree it shouldnβt replace the things we need to do ourselves, but could it help us do them better? Eg critiquing student assignments to help them think critically about structure and arguments.
19.04.2025 12:28 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Iβve been thinking about AI in publishing. Could it be good for low income writers? Access to a free structural editor, or feedback on their writing on a line level. It could be a good tool to encourage reflection on a piece. What do others think?
19.04.2025 10:22 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Itβs kind of like mixing up verbs to attribute speech? Using βsaidβ too much is discouraged even though it makes for a better reading experience.
