The Bodhisattva of Miramar Street Everything in LA is fungible. Not even the hillside is still there. In search of Lost Angeles, January 12, 2026 In late April of 1966 I hitchhiked from a friend's place on the edge of the UC Santa Barbara campus down U.S. Highway 101 to the Southern California Regional Office of SDS, which Mike Davis had recently opened on Miramar Street, just across the Harbor Freeway from Bunker Hill and downtown Los Angeles.

The Arc of History Repurposed from comments on Brad DeLong's Grasping Reality Substack History does appear at times to have some sort of arc, although maybe not the one referred to in MLK's very non-Marxist portrayal of history as a pilgrim's progress. Sixty years ago I might have been hopeful that history, at least conceptually, was finally reaching some sort of apogee, but I was young then, and my knowledge of German hadn't yet revealed to me any of the more dismal historical events that had been busily giving the lie to Enlightenment optimism as I was being born.

Questions. I Have Questions. So when is some foreign army gonna come grab our disgusting dictator and spirit him off to an unknown destination? Will they let us see the Epstein files afterward, do you think? And what's the likelihood they'll be wanting our oil as compensation for the favor? The 21st century is just getting so confusing.

Questions. I have questions.

Unbidden Bits—December 23, 2025 Three years from now, will there be anything left in the United States that Donald Trump hasn't lifted his leg on?

To Speak Plainly: This document could have been written by the German Nazi Party of 1933. It betrays our democratic constitutional order, threatens our oldest allies, and makes white supremacy the cornerstone of our future foreign policy, It is nothing less than a blueprint for the creation of a fascist international. Every citizen of the United States who values the democratic traditions of this country should renounce both it and the filth it represents, shun the people who dared to write it, and drive them all from office.

The Kirk Circus Revisited Erika Kirk clearly can’t tell the difference between piety and hypocrisy, between grief and grift, and seems to have convinced herself that we won’t be able to either. Sadly, she has that in common with most of her fellow MAGA enthusiasts. If they weren’t so smug about their ambitions, it’d be a lot easier to pity them.

Unbidden Bits—December 9, 2025 The US Supreme Court majority, in an excess of misbegotten sanctimony, seems determined to turn our entire government over to a coprophile-in-chief and his legion of wannabe Nazi camp followers. Decent people, however, look forward to the day when all six of these black-robed poseurs find themselves plunked down next to the Trumps, the Vances, the Millers, et al., in the prisoners’ dock of a long overdue re-run of the Nuremberg Trials. Deus vult, it turns out, doesn’t especially care who does the invoking, as long as its divine need for victims is respected.

Capital Allocation In the near to medium term, the only profitable enterprise in the United States is likely to be influence peddling. In the long term, the singularity may also be turn out to be profitable, but not for our species. Invest wisely accordingly. NB: I am not Warren Buffett, and I did not approve this message.

Unbidden Bits—October 11, 2025 Life among our insistent new MAGA fascists is made almost palatable by the caprices of human immanence. Gibson, Sterling, Stephenson, Doctorow—their antennae have long been busy registering what’s coming, even if ours have not, at least not yet. Here’s a revelation from Sterling’s Holy Fire that has lately added to the strain on my already overworked engines of impermeability: Maya blinked.

Rum, Buggery, and the Lash Judging by his extended prance before the nation’s grand assembly of military poobahs this past Tuesday, Secretary of Cosplay Hegseth seems to have decided that Britain’s 18th century royal navy had developed almost the perfect formula for military effectiveness. He did, however, trim the original just enough to take all the fun out of it, which seemed weird for someone reputed to be both a drunk and a misogynist, but it was perfectly in tune with the Trump administration’s oft expressed infatuation with ignorant belligerence. Oorah! Semper Fi!

Orange Is the New Orange My new orange iPhone seems a lot bolder, its nubbly tech woven case a lot cruder than its svelte, steel-blue predecessor, now on its way back to Apple to be reincarnated. I’m afraid some fugitive from Miami Vice is gonna sidle up to me one of these days in Walmart and mutter “brown shoes?” as he reaches for a bag of Cheetos on the next shelf over.

The Kirk Circus Everybody has a take. Everybody is deploring, threatening, scribbling cringeworthy hagiographies, lowering flags to half mast, offering up thoughts and prayers. Charlie Kirk got what he deserved. He got what he’d already said he’d be willing to accept, if not endorse, as collateral damage in pursuit of a what he considered to be a vigorous and necessary defense of the second amendment.

Unbidden Bits—September 9, 2025 Does Stephen Miller really not realize that in painting targets on all our backs, he’s also painted one on his own? I can’t imagine being thrilled at the moral certainty that millions of people are wanting me dead. Despite all Miller’s public bravado, I have no idea how he can either. I suppose sadomasochism has its own logic. I’m grateful I’ve never felt the urge find out how that logic works.

Steve Jobs’s Last Stand An earlier version of this post appeared as a comment on Cory Doctorow’s Medium article “AI software assistants make the hardest kinds of bugs to spot.” Will someone please, please tell Tim Cook and Craig Federighi to stand firm on the barricades? Their ambivalence toward the current trends in AI reflects what’s always distinguished Apple from other companies in the tech industry.

Memento Mori Dear Sir, You’ll be dead soon. What’ll be the use of all that power and money then? Will it establish and preserve a legacy? I doubt it—ambitious people will come from near and far to piss on a tyrant’s legacy as well as on his grave. Pigeons will shit on his statues, and the funding he leaves behind to have them cleaned will be reinvested in bitcoin by his heirs.
