in the breeding specialists office the first thing she brings up is Soap and Ghost's closeness. She seems nervous but she suggests, if ghost was willing, that after they move soap inside they could fashion the artificial host with Ghost's scent and DNA to hopefully convince Soap to lay in it.

Something suggested in the meeting was moving Soap from the ocean to one of their indoor facilities for winter where hopefully the temperature regulation would keep Soap able to breed for a while longer. it wouldn't be his first time, and he had done well last time when recovering from an injury.

He doesn't contribute much, but as the meeting comes to a close the head of their breeding program asks to speak to Ghost in her office. She had great success in breeding animals in the past, including other mer species, but soap's species were always particularly challenging

Simon is in a meeting one day a few weeks into carrying the clutch, a couple of the workers called together to brainstorm last ditch efforts on how to get Soap to breed as his window for laying quickly comes to a close. Simon sitting their knowing Soap's eggs are safely burrow inside him.

Simon has been absolutly ruined for anyone else, after getting fucked and laid in by Soap he doesn't think he could ever sleep with anyone besides the mer, and while Soap's species has on occasion been observed to only keep a partner for one season, he can tell soap is in this for the long run to.

After breeding Soap's species' cum changes slightly from the intent of fertilization to being packed with enzymes and other compounds the eggs and Simon himself will soak up, giving the host an easier time carrying and the eggs a better chance at growing healthy baby mer.

Ghost takes all the field work he can, any excuse to be along the coast on his own, and Soap really seems to appreciate it taking every chance he has to shower Ghost with love and on occasion fuck him silly. Ghost tells himself its only because he knows Soap's cum can be beneficial for the eggs.

Ghost's colleagues would come to the conclusion that Soap had bred with something wild they didn't have tabs on, and the babies would be caught and cared for, Ghost could care for them.
But of course all that would only happen if ghost could hide the fact that he was carrying the eggs

The conservationists were hoping to keep any babies Soap sired in the center for a while until they got big enough that their chances of surviving on their own were decent. best case scenario Ghost gives birth in the ocean but the infants stay near long enough to be noticed and caught by them.

but in those last 1-2 months hes gonna be fit to burst and there wont be any hiding of that belly. The other issue would be where to give birth, preferably he would wade into the water and be held by Soap while he delivered their young but he also knows that while mer newborns fend for themselves

Part 2

When the eggs are laid in a host each one is only about the size of a blueberry, but Ghost knows over the next six months as he gestates them through winter they will grow exponentially to the size of grapefruits. Ghost is a big fellla he knows he can hide his expanding belly for a while.

Ghost didn't count this as one of the many bad things he had done in life but he knew others wouldn't see it that way. Would they at least let him see through growing his clutch? Simon has to report back to the others at the center about the starfish. He knows the bigger news would be that he solved their mating crisis with Soap, but he can't share that.
Pregnant with slowly developing eggs nestled deep inside him. Eggs so important to conservation, but also just too Simon.

Simon takes them and eats and drinks slowly trying to subdue the wave of emotion the gesture brought on. Soap contents himself with happily trilling and running his hands over ever bare inch of Simon's skin. He plays up his dramatics when Simon has too leave, but lets him go without real trouble.
