it very well may be regional! I am not the voice of American linguistics at all given that I grew up in England, lol. I associate 'singles' with, frankly, situations that involve either fast food or strippers (or older movies?), so I have no idea which region it would belong to lmao

Asking someone for a $2 bill is madness and I stand by it lol

So like, personally, if I had a bill that was like $12 and wanted to add a $3 tip, I'd give a 20 and say 'I'll just have 5 back'. I wouldn't specify singles but if I needed singles I'd say 'Can I get five 1's back'. Any other denomination doesn't really matter bc we don't have notes between 1 and 5.

Saying 'bills' is excessive usually and causes confusion because is 'five dollar bills' a single 5, or five ones? So generally we don't say anything beyond the number, and then singles to specify. At least in my experience.

I think typically saying 'four 1's' would be most common. Note is way more old-fashioned - I've only heard older or very fancy people use 'note'. And singles would be the replacement for 'ones', versus saying 'I need a five back' or something to that effect.
