oh another great option in this category is the more modern handheld, panic's playdate! no backlight and very fun range of games on there, including one i worked on lol

don't know if the issue with screens is backlight, but if it is, my first thought was 90s tech that didn't use backlights in screens, like an original gameboy/sp or a standard gen1-3 tamagotchi
