myself again
while waiting
for salvation
on a mountainside
within a dream
love's grandest
exhortation
signal fire's
marking time
where air
is thin & rarefied
treetops dancing
to the clouds
& truth remains
a mystery sanctified

a nail in the tire
when I wished
I were the prize
in the cereal box
instead
last one standing
in musical chairs
where sole purpose
humiliation
for a solitary child
am I too sensitive
& should I toughen up

mind on the move
the turns life has taken
underneath worn soles
little pebbles were
bricks & cobbled stones
weeds & wildflowers in cracks
birds on wires
nests elegantly perched
atop old telephone poles
sun rises & sets
heart squeezes
at simple things

On this Mother's Day, I'm thinking of how quickly childhood passes, and how lucky I am to have such a wonderful daughter.

in the garden
on the grass
with dirty toes
poked into damp soil
I watched
as pill bugs
marched along
on clovers & dandelions
& sour grass stalks
put my face
right down into the earth
breathed in life
until I was summoned
for bath time, then pajamas.
