In my Bio & Soc class, UGs act as reviewers/editors as a mock peer review. They see
-difficulty finding responsive reviewers (& w/o COI)
-variable quality reviews
-issues matching reviewers to article
Goal is to unveil realities of science evaluation (& hopefully train better reviewers). This helps

Agree to all. Funneling between reviewers accepting papers that cite them often starts with editors’ invite to review. As a guest editor, I also see compounding that, due to time, many reviewers recommend accepting w/o seemingly in-depth review. Many factors contribute to the observed outcome

AI Eroded Doctors’ Ability to Spot Cancer Within Months in Study
Artificial intelligence, touted for its potential to transform medicine, led to some doctors losing skills after just a few months in a new study.
“The AI in the study probably prompted doctors to become over-reliant on its recommendations, ‘leading to clinicians becoming less motivated, less focused, and less responsible when making cognitive decisions without AI assistance,’ the scientists said in the paper.”

Faculty want to be helpful to students, but our time is split, and we must prioritize students in which we have a prior (and formalized) commitment.
(And yes, I as an early career researcher am learning new ways to be more protective of my time, too. So this serves as a self-reminder, too.)

#PhD students: pls don't make heavy asks of faculty time/expertise for your dissertation if you cannot include them on your committee. Use your existing committee, drop unhelpful members, or ask someone with service commitment (DGS). Heavy asks can be disproportionate to untenured faculty, esp. WOC.

ASHG is concerned about the research cuts in the proposed U.S. FY26 budget, forecasting substantial reductions to the NIH and other agencies. We urge the U.S. Congress to reject this proposal and maintain support for life-saving biomedical research. Read More: www.ashg.org/publications... #ASHG

Just an OKC airport sign advertising “Elemental Coffee” at Gate 8. White background with orange and black design components.
As a scientist, I appreciate the effort in signage/marketing. But I also wish the coffee shop was at Gate 27 instead. (Or even 58 for atomic weight, or 2 or 3 for valence…)

For those concerned about DNA ownership by corporations like 23andMe BUT do not understand impacts of funding cuts to the National Institutes of Health:
Absent NIH funds, researchers will have to seek industry $$ to conduct research. Even more of your genomic data will be co-opted by corporations.
