This is pretty common in an economic downturn. Discretionary spending drops. There is a mid-price section that often does well in this kind of economy - it's enough to feel like a treat, but still fits in many budgets. I've stood in line at Craft Cafe and Wild Thyme recently as they are booming.

Tomorrow (February 12th) has been designated a Day of Mourning across the province of British Columbia, to mark the tragedy at Tumbler Ridge, to remember the victims, and to support the community in its grief. The Legislature will be marking a Moment of Silence at noon; we encourage people and organizations across the City to join in that marking of silence, and reflect in the way that is appropriate for you and those close to you. New Westminster is a connected community, and we know that grief shared is a lighter burden to carry. If you feel the need to be with community, to come together and share at this time, we encourage community members to gather at the front steps at City Hall at 6pm on February 12th for a candlelight vigil. All are welcome. There will be no formal ceremony, only an opportunity to be together, support one another, and to send our community’s love north to the people of Tumbler Ridge. Hold those you love close to you tomorrow, and hold your heart open for those you don’t yet know. That is where the light is found during dark times.
