But his influence is far from gone.

As measles has exposed, it’s there in Short Creek’s low vaccination rates — a result of Jeffs’ distrust of outside medical professionals and, in turn, Creekers’ post-Jeffs suspicion of anyone trying to exert control over their lives.

For a century, Colorado City was a stronghold of the FLDS, a polygamous offshoot of the Mormon Church. But in the early 2000s, the area became infamous under the cult-like control of FLDS leader Warren Jeffs.

Since Jeffs' incarceration in 2011, the community has changed a lot.

There were protests outside Abe Hamadeh's office for months. Frequently, someone called police, who unfailingly found nothing inappropriate going on.

Oh, and Hamadeh's staff had a protester's car towed and allegedly lied to her about it.

While driving southbound on State Route 51, Julio's truck was hit by another driver. Upon pulling off the freeway, he called 911 to file an accident report.
