Some rando okonomiyaki joint in Shibuya. It was a Google Lens error, not the menu.

Wellβ¦ I *am* fond of saying that just because a restaurant isnβt for me, that doesnβt mean it isnβt for somebody else.

Tokyo in general seems like it would be an absolute nightmare for anybody with reduced mobility.
08.02.2026 14:46 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0(Stay tuned.)
08.02.2026 14:44 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Ha! It does. But itβs currently below freezing in Tokyo, so whoeverβs sitting there might actually wish for the opposite.
08.02.2026 11:07 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A look through the front door of a restaurant so narrow that half the door is blocked by a chair for a table set immediately next to the door, leaving only about 12β to squeeze past the poor soul who is seated there as you enter.
Anytime youβre annoyed that youβve been given the worst seat in the house, just remember that you could be sitting here.
(Yes, that is the front door.)
(Different shop, in case it wasnβt clear. Not going back for that punishment again.)
08.02.2026 03:02 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Is β180-degree oppositeβ a double negative?
Better. Fantastic.
Canβt say Iβve ever had Japanese in France. But todayβs tempura was the 180-degree opposite of yesterdayβs.
08.02.2026 02:56 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Certainly when itβs fried in dank oil that hasnβt been changed recently. Another indication that this wasnβt βspecialβ treatment.
08.02.2026 02:14 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I always tell people, if you think the locals always know the best restaurants, look up an internet thread where visitors ask the locals from *your* town where they should eat, read all of the responses, and see if you still feel that way.
07.02.2026 13:11 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Rule of thumb: If you feel that the locals always know the best restaurants, pull up any internet thread where a visitor asks the folks from your town where they should eat, read all of the replies, and see if you still feel that way.
07.02.2026 12:56 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Maybe! Seems unlikely based on the surrounding tables. Doesnβt take much experience to spot cold, greasy tempura from across the room. But the fact remains, any internet thread asking the locals where to eat is invariably a parade of horrors with the occasional commenter who knows their stuff.
07.02.2026 12:45 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0Currently living the counterargument to βeating like a local is best.β Great ratings, filled with locals, one of the worst meals Iβve ever had in Tokyo.
Reminder: Every country in the world is filled with millions of people who have terrible taste in food.
β¦and probably so impossible in the U.S. where everybody would always just get as much food as they possibly could because BIG = value :-/
06.02.2026 12:57 β π 7 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Another thing I *deeply* appreciate about restaurants in Japan. There is so much emphasis on options for portion size β the amount of rice, whether youβd like a smaller or larger version of later courses, etc. Itβs so thoughtful and so smart.
