Ha! It does. But it’s currently below freezing in Tokyo, so whoever’s sitting there might actually wish for the opposite.

A look through the front door of a restaurant so narrow that half the door is blocked by a chair for a table set immediately next to the door, leaving only about 12” to squeeze past the poor soul who is seated there as you enter.

Anytime you’re annoyed that you’ve been given the worst seat in the house, just remember that you could be sitting here.

(Yes, that is the front door.)

Is “180-degree opposite” a double negative?

Better. Fantastic.

Can’t say I’ve ever had Japanese in France. But today’s tempura was the 180-degree opposite of yesterday’s.

Certainly when it’s fried in dank oil that hasn’t been changed recently. Another indication that this wasn’t “special” treatment.

I always tell people, if you think the locals always know the best restaurants, look up an internet thread where visitors ask the locals from *your* town where they should eat, read all of the responses, and see if you still feel that way.

Maybe! Seems unlikely based on the surrounding tables. Doesn’t take much experience to spot cold, greasy tempura from across the room. But the fact remains, any internet thread asking the locals where to eat is invariably a parade of horrors with the occasional commenter who knows their stuff.

Currently living the counterargument to “eating like a local is best.” Great ratings, filled with locals, one of the worst meals I’ve ever had in Tokyo.

Reminder: Every country in the world is filled with millions of people who have terrible taste in food.

…and probably so impossible in the U.S. where everybody would always just get as much food as they possibly could because BIG = value :-/

Another thing I *deeply* appreciate about restaurants in Japan. There is so much emphasis on options for portion size — the amount of rice, whether you’d like a smaller or larger version of later courses, etc. It’s so thoughtful and so smart.
