All margins at restaurants are razor thin. Nobody makes insane amounts of money except MAYBE the owners and even that’s a maybe. The difference here is that waitstaff get a high wage because of tips and in other places they get near minimum wage.

Somewhat agree. Waitstaff should be paid more, but also still make tips. Tips are resilient against wage stagnation and allow this line of work to be a career where a person with no college degree can make a median wage. There are very few jobs outside of food and hospitality where that’s the case.

Also a busy restaurant won’t notice your silverware is missing unless you say something. It’s pretty easy to not get silverware by staying silent. Especially if you’re a party of less than 4, you just gotta advocate for yourself unless there’s a Michelin star involved 😂

Sorry this is so long, most of my upbringing on my mamas side was funded by generous tips so I’m very biased haha

Young waiters ignore me all the time in restaurants because of my age/being relatively quiet. I usually still tip 20% to dispel that stereotype about young people rather than confirming it LMAO. If they’re outright hostile I might drop to 10% on principle, but I’ve yet to have service that poor.

Discriminating against your tables is the mark of someone shitty at their job. Professionalism is doing your job with grace regardless of tips. This does not change that it is VERY disrespectful to not tip in the face of average and above service regardless of income level.

Tipping cultures getting out of hand but Im always gonna be team “if you can’t afford to tip, you can’t afford X”. My mom worked as a waitress/bartender my whole life and there’s a lot of physical work that goes into it for an awful base pay. Tips are what keeps mouths fed and asses off the streets.
