Vivian Wu on the chilling effects of censorship:
“Censorship leads to self-censorship” People here “will start to worry that you as a speaker will be identified as an individual & fear that the family in China–that there will be a knock on their door with a warning that your child should behave”1/2

Vivian Wu, on how coverage of China has changed internationally:
Correspondents who lived in China longer “can read between the lines,” when propaganda is delivered. But younger journalists don’t have that chance anymore. “They spend two years in Beijing, and then they are sent to another country.”

…a more positive outlook on the grasp Chinese propaganda has on the Chinese diaspora in Europe by Chu Yang: “Of course people use WeChat(…)to communicate with family back in China(…)but they also try to consume news that is more focused on Europe or consume local news sources”

…and Vivian Wu continues on Chinese Propaganda: “Internet control is almost flawless there (…) all the services and platforms are blocked in China(..) you find at least 5 copycats - produced in Chinese for Chinese (…)We have a joke in China on CCTV news: Only the weather and date are true.”

Great beginning by @nasredinhoja.bsky.social for this really interesting event. Among other things, we should keep in mind the word Nuance - the “tendency - especially in Europe - to put everyone in the same bag. But there is quite a diversity”

🎯 For example, the opinion could state that climate inaction violates international law.

🥊 However, some are against this view. For example, the US and Saudi Arabia have argued against it.

Regardless of the opinion's outcome, it cannot directly force individual governments to take more climate action. Unlike ICJ rulings, opinions are not directly binding. However, they have an indirect effect: national and international courts can refer to this opinion in their rulings.

1️⃣ What international legal obligations do states have regarding climate protection, as well as future generations?

2️⃣ What consequences do these have for states that have contributed to climate change through their actions or omissions?

Extreme heat could lead to 30,000 deaths a year in England and Wales by 2070s, say scientists Worst-case scenario of 4.3C of warming could result in fiftyfold rise in heat-related deaths, researchers say More than 30,000 people a year in England and Wales could die from heat-related causes by the 2070s, scientists have warned. A new study calculates that heat mortality could rise more than fiftyfold in 50 years because of climate heating. Researchers at UCL and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine compared different potential scenarios, looking at levels of warming, measures to mitigate and adapt to the climate crisis, regional climatic differences and potential power outages. They also modelled the ageing population. Continue reading...

A woman in a call center said to me recently:

“Climate change is 1. Real and 2. Affects everyone.

It shouldn’t matter what kind of political affiliation 1 has. And still, some governments are pulling their support from climate change policies. This will cost us. We will have to pay a high price”

Es ist heiß in Wien. Wieder einmal 31 Grad Celsius.

Ohne Klimaanlagen, ohne Pool, in schlecht gedämmten Wohnungen.

“School shooting in Graz” - I had to read this message twice as this is so highly unusual for Austria and I couldn’t believe it.
…and after a quick search, school shootings in Austria happened only twice before:
2018 (one person injured)
1997 (1 dead one injured)

…and today 2025
