Field Frame Friday: Salmon Alevins These tiny fish, only a few days old, are newly hatched salmon. They still have their yolk sacs (bright orange in this photo) and are called β€œalevins.”

What are freshly hatched salmon called? Alevins! Cassidy Cooper photographed these tiny fish in their early life stage. πŸŸπŸ“·

Infographic on the chemistry of ice cream. Ice cream is formed from fats, proteins and emulsifiers, which in combination stabilise air bubbles in ice cream. Small crystals are needed for smooth ice cream, and air makes up 30-50% of ice cream's volume. A range of flavouring compounds are used. Stabilisers, often extracted from seaweed, are added in small amounts to reduce the rate of melting.

Infographic on the composition of Earth. Scientists determine the composition of Earth by analysing surface rocks and inferring the density and composition of deeper layers from how seismic waves move through Earth.

Oxygen is the most abundant element in the crust. Mafic rocks, rich in magnesium and iron, dominate oceanic crust. Felsic rocks, higher in silicates, are the most abundant in continental crust.

The mantle is composed mainly of magnesium-rich silicate minerals, such as olivine and pyroxene. The lower mantle contains less magnesium than the upper mantle.

Earth's outer core is liquid, while the inner core is solid. Both layers consist mainly of an iron-nickel alloy with lighter element impurities. The core’s exact composition is still unknown. Molten iron stirring in the outer core drives Earth's magnetic field.

TLDR: The eradication of screwworm from the US was super important for US livestock. A tiny US facility in Panama drops sterile screwworms from planes to prevent the spread of fertile screwworms

Why maintain a barrier zone in Panama?
Mexico border - BIG!
Panama isthmus - SMALL!

Insight: Trump funding freeze upends agricultural research at US universities From its earliest days in 1906, when the University of California secured a small stretch of fertile soil in the state's Central Valley, a quiet promise took root - that this place, originally called University Farm, would someday grow mighty.

For decades, @ucdavis.bsky.social stood tall among the world's giants in agricultural research. That progress is now at risk amid threats to federal research funding (via @reuters.com) www.reuters.com/world/us/tru...

Treanor is a brilliant lawyer & constitutional scholar. Embarrassing for Martin.

I really feel for the early career researchers impacted by what’s happening in the US. It’s hard enough for them to complete a PhD and build a career. This has long term implications for research capacity globally.

Two Planes, in Washington and Chicago, Abort Landings to Avoid Collisions The near misses on Tuesday came after a string of aviation disasters, including the midair collision between an Army helicopter and a passenger jet last month that killed 67 people.

Within the span of 90 minutes on Tuesday morning, two airplanes, at Washington’s Ronald Reagan National Airport and at Chicago’s Midway International Airport, were forced to abort landings to avoid collisions, federal aviation officials said.

Serenity Prayer
Send me a slow news day
A quiet, subdued day,
In which nothing much happens of note,
Save for the passing of time,
The consumption of wine,
And a re-run of Murder, She Wrote.

Grant me a no-news day,
A spare-me-your-views day,
In which nothing much happens at all,
Except a few hours together,
Some regional weather
A day we can barely remember.
