A light-hearted illustration showing two female European fiddler crabs, in the foreground, on a beach with a male fiddler crab next to his burrow in the background. The female crab on the left is saying, 'Oooooh, I love watching them wave!'. The female on the right is saying, 'Me too, but it's even better when they start thumping the sand...'. The illustration is by www.neilsmithillustrations.co.uk
Male fiddler crabs wave their outsized claw to attract female mates and now Beth Mortimer & co have discovered that the crabs also beat the sand with their claws and carapaces, producing the loudest sand vibrations when using both strategies
