The media likes to paint a portrait of America falling apart, and in many ways it is, but people vastly underestimate the sheer number of good people doing kind and great things.
"Never underestimate America's ability to reinvent itself," said an Al-Jazeera producer once.

One girl I spoke with had great experiences with therapy and was able to use the tools she learned from it to show up for a friend who needed her, and now wants to be a psychologist. She also loved singing, and I pointed out that it seemed like she also meant that to be in service of others.

While most charter schools are known for concentrating on a particular subject (this one is dance), the kids are very much "normal" and get a lot of extra help if they need it. They're lovely places, and the kids just earnestly want to give back to their communities.

OK, well you have to understand that Charter Schools are special designation schools within LA Unified School District, publicly funded and tuition-free but functionally like a private school. These particular kids are low/middle class but from good homes and have good support systems.
