My guess is that most people don’t understand the ‘cumulative’ nature of research and how gaps will affect progress. It’s horrifying.

But - the people he has ‘let in’ are even worse (hard to be) and smarter (easy to be) than he is. We are in trouble no matter what happens next.

I mean - removing the word ‘economic’ from that sentence makes it even more true.
