you’re not missing anything. There’s not a lot of first mover advantage here.

Seems like I need to read up on yoga nidra! I’ve only ever encountered these techniques in a meditation context.

I do feel nice though.

did a guided NSDR recording. At the beginning the speaker was like "this isn't meditation, it's a different thing"… then guided me through breathwork and a body scan.

Not exactly beating the "meditation for guys with a nootropics stack" charges here.

Basically: I can research this on my own too, but I wonder what people's experiences have been with it. (And some initial searching has not disabused me of the vibe.)

Gut check: non-sleep deep rest seems interesting, but the term seems to be mostly used by nervous system bros who want to sell me nootropics. Is there another term I should be looking up for this? Has anyone I know here tried this and seen good results?

I've been re-reading the 2015 edition of The Design of Everyday Things. One interesting thing he mentions right away is that after he introduced "affordance" as a term, everybody started misusing it. We've been mixing "affordance" and "signifier" in his terms. Getting clear on the two is neat.

Two loaves of white bread cooling on a rack. They have a weird shape and way too much flour on top, but they’re just about perfectly brown.

I made bread! It’s ugly because it’s my first loaves ever but I learned a lot and I’m excited to taste it!

The buckets aren’t that fancy, BTW. Just food-safe 2-gallon buckets with 1" holes in the top. Had to get a guy at Lowe’s to get them off a high shelf but that’s the extent of the exclusivity. πŸ˜†

Kratky in the basement Growing lettuce indoors with the power of hydroponics!

It’s Kratky hydroponics. Big draw is that the buckets, nutrients, and a light source are all you need. Slightly less efficient in material use than a nutrient film or flood and drain setup but WAY simpler.

Post from last year: bytes.zone/posts/kratky... (I’m due to write an update)

Accidentally left out a couple words: so here’s another way to say it: one bucket started in full strength nutrients a week before the other.

Four seedling-stage lettuce plants in white buckets. The upper right plant is the largest, followed by the lower right, the lower left, then the upper left. The plants in the right bucket have a couple true leaves each, while the ones in the left bucket barely have one true leaf each.

Accidentally did a little experiment. These four blocks were started the same day, but one bucket started in the full-strength nutrients and the other stayed in just water until today. Can you tell which?

CONSTANTLY. I also feel I’d be much further along in life if I treated myself as part of β€œeveryone” to which standard advice can apply instead of constantly trying to be a special outsider.

Philip Larkin’s this be the verse mangled into Ozymandias, the text reads

They Oz you up, your mandyias.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They give you vast and trunkless legs
A sunken shattered visage too.
But they were Ozzed up in their turn
By Mandyias upon the sand
Who half the time had wrinkled lips And half in sneering cold command.
Oz hands on mandyias to man.
Like mighty works atop a shelf Look on them early as you can
Ye mighty and despair yourself

Banner: DECIDING TO WIN: Toward a common sense renewal of the Democratic Party

THE PROBLEM:
Democrats have been offering voters a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. This is despite the fact that only 40% of voters want PB&J and 35% want ham and cheese.

(A Pie chart shows 40% pb and j, 35% ham and cheese, and 25% other)

THE SOLUTION:
The Democrats are poised to earn a supermajority by targeting what the median American voter wants: a peanut butter and ham sandwich
