It's always frustrating to me how the term AI has evolved. AI was an umbrella term from 1950s. Then Machine Learning (a subset of AI), Deep Learning (a subset of ML), and modern generative AI (a subset DL). Now LLMs are used synonymously with "AI". So I made these graphics of the "AIroboros"

This particularly annoys me when it comes to writing in academia. Especially for those for whom English is a second language, it can be a very useful tool for learning how to write academically, essentially by using it as an editor. It feels like another level of privilege not acknowledging that.

Telling graduate students not to use chatgpt is a mistake. We need to teach them *how* to use it responsibly, without letting it destroy their learning of academic skills. Belittling them for using it makes you sound like a fearmonger from the early fear-the-internet days #academia

I study dark matter, cosmology, and particle physics for a living at UC Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. On the weekends I write explainers about surprising places physics shows up in the natural world.
