The drunk uncle theory.

You don’t argue with the casually homophobic uncle at Thanksgiving dinner to change his mind; you argue so that the closeted cousin at the kids table knows there’s safe people and better possibilities out there

its wild to me that often the main divide between neuro and psych PHD programs is whether you work with animals or humans, esp since neuro stipends tend to be quite a bit higher

The basal ganglia output is often framed as a motor gate: corticostriatal circuits select an action, then GPi/SNr-thalamus helps release it. In humans, we find this same pathway carries cognitive variables embedded in movement signalsβ€”and even produces learning-relevant signals after feedback. 1/10

I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.

This is such a common thing at top tier programs, especially if you don’t come from a traditional background. I applied to 20 programs between 2019 and 2021. 5 interviews, one offer.

Now I don’t think I could've landed a better place

Official concedes 8-year-old who died in U.S. custody could have been saved as devastated family recalls final days The parents of 8-year-old Anadith Danay Reyes Alvarez told CBS News that their daughter died in Border Patrol custody because of negligence and discrimination.

In 2023, CBP killed a young Black girl that they imprisoned by incarcerating her and failing to provide the needed medical care for her sickle cell anemia

You cannot reform this apparatus which kills people no matter which party is in charge

The self defense claim is batshit. Even if the car was coming at him - which it wasn’t - the best self defense is to get out of the way

Shooting a car doesn’t stop it moving, and as the clip clearly shows, if anything it directly lead the car to accelerate into another car!

The way ICE officers approached the vehicle involved in today's shooting was counter to their training, a senior Department of Homeland Security official told NBC News.

The official said ICE officers are trained:

β€” never to approach a vehicle from the front;

β€” to approach vehicles or possibly armed people in a β€œtactical L” 90-degree angle to prevent injury or cross-fire;

β€” not to shoot at a moving vehicle;

β€” only to use force if there is an immediate risk of serious injury or death.

ICE officers are also instructed that firing at a vehicle will not make it stop moving in the direction of the officer.

This seems significant: not a FORMER DHS official, but a SENIOR (current) one saying the officer who fired acted counter to training.

This is not an admin that admits mistakes. And they are hanging this guy out to dry on Day One.

I think they know this is bad. Really bad.

Minnesota law enforcement have video from multiple angles of an unjustified deadly shooting in Minneapolis. Therefore, they should arrest and prosecute the shooter for murder. The fact that the killer is a federal agent should not alter that basic logic. If anything, charging is even more important.

losing my mind at the "she should have followed directions" people

really? really? you're cool with "if you don't follow directions, they get to kill you"? that seems like a good state of affairs to you? that seems like how law enforcement ought to work: instant obeisance or death?

Hold up, let’s be precise. It wouldn’t kill the AI industry, it would only affect the LLM and gen AI part.

other β€œAI” models dont abuse the lack of copyright laws for training models the way LLMs and gen ai do, so most of the industry will be just fine (deepfold, self driving cars, etc)

Maduro was a brutal repressive dictator who destroyed Venezuela. Trump did not have congressional or UN approval to engage in unilateral regime change. Trump's actions were illegal. All of those things can be true at the same time. Don't let them make this about Maduro.
