If Trump or one of his minions at this point told me 2+2 = 4 I would feel compelled to check the math.

Jesus fucking Christ.

How much less than $1T is that number? About a trillion dollars less.

And these people are arguing that the US has already brought in *TRILLIONS* (PLURAL) in revenue.

The sheer, monumental scale of the lie is breathtaking to behold.

These people cannot be trusted to give numbers about anything.

So how much tariff revenue did it generate?

Let’s pretend none of it is de minimis and say the average tariff was 30% (again, giving a best case scenario to the argument).

That means - in the best possible scenario - the US has gotten ~$92 billion in tariff revenue.

So TOTAL IMPORTS of Canadian, Mexican & Chinese goods is, very optimistically, for that 8 week period, about $307,000,000,000.00 - still a *huge* amount of money.

So let’s say, generously, that the Trump Tariffs have been in effect for about 8 weeks on about 30% of all US trade. Let’s also be generous and say 90% of that was imports.

90% of $608G = $548G
30% of $548G = $165G
($165G/30d)*7d*8wks = $306.5G

The “reciprocal” tariffs went into effect for something like 3 days, then had a 90 day pause which ended a day or two ago. Let’s call it another 5 days.

China had *massive* tariffs which essentially drove trade to $0 for a few weeks, but for about 8 weeks has had tariffs of about 20% on most goods

The large scale IEEPA tariffs announced in February against Canada & Mexico were in effect for, generously, 5 days total. Since then anything that qualifies for USMCA has been exempt, which is the VAST majority of the trade there.

In 2024 the US did $7.3T in trade, globally. Let’s assume that the massive global consumer boycotts in 2025 haven’t put a chunky dent in that number.

That’s ~$608G/mo. That’s a lot of money.

Now, in terms of Tariffs:

I fucking hate the way this admin talks about numbers. *Trillions* in tariffs? Really? TRILLIONS?

A Twitter user quote tweeting a public defender complaining that leftists have been calling for them to be killed for defending people accused of crimes and saying this person admitted that they've defended rapists and helped them get lighter sentences. Another user points out public defenders don't chose their clients and the original poster responds so they were just following orders then?

I am begging YouTube to understand that when I block an ad it’s because I don’t want to see *that advertiser* at all. Serving me every possible version in every possible language of the ad afterwards will not endear the advertiser to me

Trump announces he's taking over the DC police department to rescue the city from "crime, bloodshed, and bedlam."

Violent crime in DC reached a 30 year low in 2024 and is down sharply again this year.

Oh man I just imagined a lit project examining subversion of the author’s intent in a movie adaptation re: Heinlein’s Starship Troopers that focuses on irony of corporate interests squeezing 4 sequels out of the subversive adaptation, realigning it with the fascist politics of the source material.

People get *really fucking mad* when I point out that the US won’t enforce ICC warrants as though it’s my fault or something.

I don’t think it’s good that the US isn’t an ICC member, but pretending it is when it isn’t doesn’t actually accomplish anything

I don’t think anyone is ready for the kind of world order we get if it becomes legal again to take and keep land by military force.

This is well intentioned, but worth noting that due to the constitutional prohibition against double-jeopardy, the US is not a signatory to the ICC.

I think it should suck it up and figure out a way to sign, but the current reality is nevertheless what it is.

This was included in the notes for a lab meeting, and I didn't even have to look it up to know this was obviously not something Gandhi ever said.
