I don't think there's much use in asking users of a social network to behave differently — platforms are too big for norms like that, people mostly aren't posting to debate — but similar charges of meanness/insularity accompanied Twitter's rise, and arguably described a reason people *liked* it!

Which means that Musk's attempts to control and manipulate his A.I. may ultimately work against his interests: They open up a political, rather than a mystical, understanding of artificial intelligence. An A.I. that works like magic can have a spooky persuasive power, but an A.I. we know how to control should be subject to the same suspicion (not to mention political contestation) as any newspaper or cable channel. A.I. deployed as a propaganda machine is a much more familiar technology than A.I. deployed as an oracle. For those of us less attracted to (or convinced by) an anti-political mystic machine god, answering questions like "why did computer do that?" and "how to make computer do exactly what I want?" are of paramount importance, even if they also open up the possibility of more subtle manipulations.

great point from @maxread.info regarding "regarding white genocide," and one that relates to the weird ChatGPT sycophancy thing from the other week: crude interventions like this break the AI illusion maxread.substack.com/p/regarding-...

When you buy groceries, who benefits more, you or the supermarket? It's... sort of a weird question, isn't it?

The use of Mozilla's "do not track" feature was apparently, instead, *Able To Be Used As A Metric By Which To Track People*.

Y'know, eventually my brain is just going to flash boil and shoot out my ears as steam like I'm a cartoon.
