Often the short story becomes a chapter in the book. It's a way to ground me in the story and then figure out the right place to start. When I just went straight into write, I often got more confused!

Feels slightly different for each book. I found it most effective for me to have a beginnings drafted as a short story THEN dream up the ending. Then I have something to pants, lightly outlines towards!
