Of course they should backtrack *because it’s a terrible idea*, not because there’s pressure from JD Vance.

This is the truest thing I have ever seen. You cannot imagine how much the Romans would have lost their minds for excel. They literally already started writing our historical chronicles in synchronized columns *by hand*

The essence of Usyk: motivation and discipline key to Dubois destruction The undisputed heavyweight champion explains how he learned from his previous win against the Briton and introduces β€˜Ivan’, the clinching left hook

β€œI don’t have motivation. I have discipline. Motivation? It’s temporary. Today, for example, you have motivation. But tomorrow you wake up early and you don’t have motivation. ... Uh-uh. No, bro. Motivation is good but discipline is better.”

Hits so hard, especially the "Uh-uh. No, bro."

Very much agree. My own formulation for the malaise is the demise of the future. If people can’t imagine a future that is better vsa dismal continuation of the β€˜scuzzy’ present then do not be surprised if politics and conduct in general retreats to sauve qui peut.

Farage’s attraction to a certain type of man (and woman, though less so) is that he is irreverent in all the ways that they admire, and he is a true believer. What others find objectionable, they find charismatic. Watching other men around men like Farage, they seem to be almost under hypnosis.

Hackney birdsong? Stolen Lime bikes the new sound of summer in the city Some in an east London park say they like the incessant beeping, but others that it’s an indication of low-level crime

'That annoying Beep Beep Beep is the ire of many city dwellers'

I'll tell you what is annoying: the 7,500 hit-and-runs by cars recorded annually in London. This trumps my concerns about the sounds made by bikes used by kids who lack access to bikes.

an open society to look like. And yet when it comes to opinion polls, you will often see people throwing around the idea of a ban as if there were something self-evidently reasonable about such a position.

Suella Braverman is publishing on how to leave ECHR

She will suggest role ECHR in UK-EU Treaty should be "renegotiated"

What is the current position?

Article 524: ECHR is a foundation of Treaty
Article 692: either party can immediately suspend justice & home affairs cooperation if that changes

if only Greg Wallace had been a senior immigration official (responsible for diversity) he could have left with a clean record

And the fast talking is of high content / quality complexity words / ideas.

I am a very fast talker but when I met @wendylyon.bsky.social and @cathalmalone.bsky.social I met more than my match.

I’m English.

Word-skill is one factor I suggest. Irish people I know communicate much faster verbally than British. A legal academic I know from Ireland said he had to learn to talk more slowly when he took up a post in England.

A French colleague (who spoke excellent English) used to be infuriated at the degraded bureaucratic English of Brussels’ EU quarter.

I did a tribunal hearing that ran about that late once (having started IIRC at 2 pm). One of the wings laid her head on the table saying β€œI’m so tired, I can’t go on”. The chair snapped back β€œwe’re not stopping now, we’ve got to finish”, with me vigorously nodding agreement.

I really enjoyed Legal History in my LLB. Not that I conveyed that to my lecturer, - I regret.

Young refuseniks burn their IOF draft papers in the middle of Tel Aviv

They refuse to serve in the Israeli Occupation Forces, and are willing to go to military jail for their position. The new generation of refuseniks is supported by the older, many of them spent months in jail already

Welcome to the wonderful world of "trafficking."

The grift is in no way limited to Epstein. Anti-trafficking in general is a faith-based morals campaign serving as cover for state surveillance and increased criminalization of sex workers.

Services and justice survivors is the lowest priority.

On a week when the Department of Defense announced that it is contracting with an AI service that just a week ago was endorsing Hitler and claiming Jews are undermining white culture, hard to avoid the conclusion that this choice of focus for groups like the ADL reflects unexamined Islamophobia.

A moment that changed me: I stopped drinking – and realised what friendship really meant I always thought hitting the bottle made me the life and soul of the party, but sobriety helped me to be honest with myself – and make genuine connections with other people

β€œAlcohol wasn’t the bonding agent I thought it was. In fact, it was the thing I was using to keep people at a distance. I realised that drinking was actually a barrier to making lasting connections.” www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle...

The biggest barrier to social cohesion in this country is this: a news agenda framed by a stream of pseudo-research β€œreports” from right wing think tanks with the pre-determined conclusion that immigrants and Muslims are intrinsically a threat to our country.
