Well I am not well behaved!

We need permanent rental places, as millions will never afford a home. In Europe people rent the same place for their entire lives without feelng they are there on sufferance. The human need for roots is ignored at our peril.

This is a copy of a death mask decorating the county jail. The fellow's head popped off as a result of the only public hanging in the county. (That really happened.) Haunting began when the mask was removed and stopped when it was put back (legend).

At Oxford County (Ontario) for regional archivists' meeting and ran into some great folklore. The old county building (ca. 1890) sports random monkey grotesques. Legend has it they represent ten councillors the builders disliked or are the result of a curse.

I still struggle with shutting up as a government employee, having at one time been encouraged to think and speak.

When I was an undergrad we were given to understand that plagiarism could cost you your job but this lady continued to get paid more than I did and sailed into retirement.

Luckily it was a work blog and the offender was local government too. My boss threatened their boss with our legal team. They took it down but said it was a "mistake" and I should be "flattered." It felt like theft and I'm not flattered when someone steals my car. Very disappointing attitude.

I had someone copy a whole blog post I wrote word for word. They only changed out the pictures to be of their institution.

I find a friend or coworker with a friend or coworker who has access to journals to get stuff for me. Out of luck for books, unless internet archive hasn't locked it down or I buy them. Also use nefarious methods. Feels diminishing. People besides academics are capable of serious research.
