A semi-autobiographical novel of a writer at work on a new book, the narrator of HERON invents their own fictional protagonist, with whom they debate the great literature of the world. The pair attempt to find inspiration in literary history to complete the novel within the novel.

THIS VITAL ABSENCE, the spiky and subversive debut novel by Sophia Veltfort, has been acquired by Deep Vellum and A Strange Object for publication in November, 2026.

As Pitol meditates on a life lived through literature, he also creates "one of the Holy Books in which we store humanity’s imaginary.” (—Mario Bellatin, from the introduction.)

While there were collections and anthologies to follow, The Magician of Vienna was Pitol's final standalone book.
